The review pretty much echoes my sentiments, a good bit of fun to watch week to week but nothing exceptional. I enjoyed the casts camaraderie and some of the sword fights had me glued to the screen. The fact that it ended strongly means overall I'd give it a thumbs-up and would recommend it to others, however I did find the early episodes a bit trying.
Also I feel that a certain someone Yukina should have faced far greater retribution for her despicable acts than she ended up doing.

Pretty much completely agree with this, it was good but not overly special.
Side note: Maki still had probably my favorite character design in the show despite not being a lead.

So weird I just downloaded the show and marathoned it last week and now a review came up.
On points, I enjoyed it but was nothing spectacular. Some of the CGI and 3D during the sword fights look really off, and the action was so-so, but it was the characters that carry the show. But those dismembered body parts censored by utsushi was pretty fun to watch, I feel like GGO took note to this and put them up more brutal. Case and points, I compared it to KanColle (same game character designer and all), if you like KanColle you might like this.

I see this show as the contemporary equivalent of something like Sakura Wars, in that managed to avoid the dozens of things that cause me to disengage with the current crop of video game tie-in shows that the anime industry is churning out. It has a lot of rote (some might even say interchangeable) elements, but the creators appeared to treat them with much less apathy than I'm used to.
I saw someone in the ANN series discussion thread for this show say something akin to, "this is a show I won't soon forget", and that's generally my feeling as well. This is a show that could have been so forgettable, but somehow put in just enough effort to make it onto my "buy this on Bluray when it comes out" shortlist.

I had a good time with this series. The characters interactions and relationships definitely were a highlight in my viewing and were a positive major factor in overtaking the negatives that this series had. The CG was mostly fine and the developments that this series had such as lore and the villains was much more than I expected it to ever attempt as I was starting my viewing and I appreciated that. Overall, while far from perfect, I can see myself recommending to some people who are interested in the genre.

I agree with that, it could have easily been forgettable but it's actually pretty good.

I found Toji no Miko to be highly watchable in the first half but once the immediate threat was gone... the reason for one of the girl's fighting was gone... the most interesting character was gone... and the whole show became a lot closer to the cliched girl school story the first opener declared the series was rather than the Hitchcockian "wrongly accused hero on the run" tale it really was...
I lost so much interest, I'm not even going to bother to finish that paragraph, maybe not even the show. The format of the show reminds me of The Slayers first season and its "Well, that wrapped up sooner than I expected" first half but it's missing that show's new characters who sent the story and world in a different direction with an all new plot for the second half.
I'd go so far to say Toki's second half has no clear direction, certainly not on the level of the first half. Doesn't the girl who had the revenge motive come out and say "Why am I still fighting?"

Katana Maidens is an entertaining show and was one of the better shows of the past two seasons. The good episodes were really good and even the weak episodes were competent. The animation quality was usually average but was occasionally impressive. The story was well made though it was somewhat simple and it felt like some of the story elements were only brought up because they are used in the mobile game. I think the show is worth watching and I would put it in the top 5 for mobile game anime.

Actually, I found the second half of story more interesting. Sure, first half was entertaining, but kinda straightforward (eliminate the evil corrupted ones). Second half has more players on the field, intrigues, politics, maidens were put into more broad contexts of the world...
For me, this show was nice surprise... I was expecting another "cute girl fighting with the scum from the universe", but got good thriller, with nicely well-arranged fights and likeable characters. Nothing more, but nothing less.
