Bandai's re-release of the original handheld Tamagotchi pet-raising game is making its way to the U.S. and offer collectors a way to relive those sleepless nights taking care of an 8-bit alien.

So, you can't turn off Tamagotchis when you're finished? Why would they design these without a power button? What if you have to go to school or something?

The virtual pet toys that helped inspired the Digimon franchise is back just in time. I remember seeing a commercial for these VPs but it wasn't until this year that I learned about their connection to the Digimon original VPs.

I vaguely remember them always being like that. They’re like real pets. There’s nothing you can do about it.

Oh my sweet summer child. You used to have to pass off your Tamagotchi to a trusted friend if you had to do something like go to school or work.

Current versions do have workarounds for this now.

While messing with my old Tamagotchi a while back, I discovered that you can, in fact, "pause" it indefinitely by starting to set the clock and just never finishing the process. You're definitely not supposed to be able to pause them, though, and the re-release might have fixed that little exploit.

Once you're past the baby-stage, they don't really need round-the-clock care anyway.

I had major surgery when these first came out and was high as a kite on morphine. Apparently, my latest pet had died and I burst into tears because I was a murderer; It took awhile to calm me down. I only remember flashes of the scene but it's a favorite story for everyone who was there.

I didn't even know that there were "current versions", I just assumed that the average modern child didn't have the attention span long enough to kill one of these things. Laughing

(You darn kids, with your fidget spinners, and your skateboards, and your 23 skidoo!)

The versions I had as a kid had a pause function, but I still definitely accidentally killed a few when I was at school. I'd kind of like to try the originals (and maybe finally get my beloved Kuchipatchi), but I can't imagine they would be any easier to take care of as an adult with a full time job either Laughing

If they can make 1 that is a virtual Japanese Mastiff and if I had a job (am looking), then count me in.

Wasn't allowed to have one as a kid - they were banned from my school, so my parents wouldn't get me one (makes sense considering how they worked). Totally want one just to indulge my inner 12 year old, lol.

I had an original one and the price was not disimilar to this one in Mexico. Would I do this all over again... I am not sure, I bought some of the cheap ones years later and didn't use them much.
I have curiosity for the most recent versions, never really seen one yet.

That was the whole idea, and why fangirls (not just Japanese ones) became so attached to making sure their pet didn't perish.

Of course, this was back in the days when nobody had smartphones with screens and Internet, so if you had to carry a real-time app game around in your pocket, it HAD to be in 8-bit.
