I only remember two things about this anime when I watched years ago.
1) I really wanted Firiel to end up with Eusis. 2) I was really mad at the ending because she ended up with Roux. I felt like he had no personality and they had no chemistry, which is probably due to the cutting out a bunch of stuff like the review mentioned. I’ve been tempted to rewatch, but I’m not sure it’s worth it . . . |

Yeah, when I watched this way back when it aired my foremost feeling was that it could have worked, but they obviously were in such a massive rush to cover as much ground as possible that they ended shooting themselves in the foot. As it stands the show presents a bunch of ideas but everything is given so little development or exploration that it's a cavalcade of missed opportunities. Chalk this one up to the list of could-have-beens.

Wow, the review made the story sound so interesting that I looked up the manga reviews on this site (which were written by Casey Brienza, who I know went on to right, among other things, academic papers on Japanese pop culture in the West.) What a treat! This series sounds so good! There's an aspect of its description that reminds me of Scrapped Princess, with more of a fairy tale edge and political machinations than science fiction and a trek. It's too bad Tokyopop couldn't manage to release the novels or manga in full...

Mostly I know about the story from reading the novels, which go into a lot more depth than the manga or anime. They don't end, but the author is fabulous (she also wrote Dragon Sword and Wind Child, which is a great YA fantasy), so if you can hunt them down, they're worth reading. It's one of my greatest wishes that this series' novels get rescued because I'd love to see the ending done right!

Viz Media publishes Dragon Sword and Wind Child. There is a second volume by the same author called Mirror Sword and Shadow Prince both are sub headed Tales of the Magatama. The second volume is listed as published by Haikasoru as subsidiary of Viz Media. |
