I recall Hardcore Gaming recently covered the original Kowloon's Gate in April. After reading about it, I can completely understand why a game like this wasn't localized. It's literally too symbolic for the average gamer, more so if they don't have a clue about Kowloon Walled City (and likely many people had no idea about it at the time unless they were avid researchers).
You could say the game was too Japanese to localize, but it's more accurate to say it was too Chinese considering the themes and concepts of Taoism, feng shui, qi and yin & yang (among others) that run rampant through the game right when you start it up. On an interesting note, SaGa Frontier's town of Koorong was originally called Kowloon in the Japanese version and modeled exactly on the principle of "humans are the product of the environment they inhabit" (the real world Kowloon and the one in SF were both seedy, lawless places with little regard for authority and obeying the government); it's hard to say if that was the fault of bad translation work or the possibility the localizers thinking nobody in the U.S. would know what Kowloon was referencing. |
