Don't they have digital avenues? I'm sure they can stop some of the bleeding and start to slowly recover with digital sales.

For comparison's sake, the last time Shonen Jump had a circulation below 2 million, it was in the mid-70s, just before (or right around ) Kochikame's debut, let alone the debut of mega hits like Ring ni Kakero, Cobra, & Kinnikuman. Essentially, Jump has returned to the numbers it had before it truly became the standard bearer of shonen manga.
Obviously, I don't think that this is any sort of death blow for Jump, as its competitors have likewise shrunken massively, as well. As mentioned in the article, this is really more of a manga-wide problem, likely caused by the boom of digital devices & the like. These circulation numbers should be physical book sales, & I do think some magazines like Jump have a digital option in Japan, so this is really just a showcase that readers are moving over to their tablets & cell phones, instead of buying a phonebook-sized magazine, reading the chapters of their favorite manga, & then throwing them into the trash. |

Well, this drop can be because of numerous amount of things...but I for one think it's because of the drop of big series. I mean, Naruto ended, bleach is done too, and people are using more digital devices than ever to read manga. Let's not forget piracy is at an all time high, so yeah, i'm not surprised by this at all, it could easily pick up again if they have manga that people would buy an issue for.

Naruto ended in fall 2014, apparently numbers fell around 200k off that. World Trigger went on Hiatus in late 2016, that looks like it hit for another 100k.

I think the article really needs to explain clearly what print circulation is. This is not the number of copies sold, but the number of copies that were printed and circulated, aka distributed to stores for display on their shelves. The number sold is usually much less. I think we will just keep seeing these numbers drop as more people move over to digital distribution. The article does mention that the companies are putting a lot of effort into the digital side. I want to see the numbers for the digital side now for comparison. |

There it is, the sign of the End Times, but the magazine is just a first stop for One Piece anyway (besides even earlier pirated leaks). It will have to last for at least another decade and the editor who turned Mr. Attack on Titan away from Jump undeniably made THE mistake of his life.
@slau783 The circulation number is as important as the sold though number, due to SJ shipping weekly. You don´t adjust the numbers down if you are trending up and digital sales aren´t the savior of the comic industry many somehow expected them to be. The circulation even dropped by nearly 200k in 1 year. No digital arm can recoup that amount! Especially for a print focused publisher who asks about 3$ for a one analogy phone book. This is almost a protection fee! SJ lastly also sold twice as many copies in the 90s. The US market obviously crashed harder but the still. The Manga market slowly eroded too. Question: How much does the magazine currently cost? Amazon jp just confused me. One paper issue cost 250 yen in 2013 and 300 yen in digital form.

You know, it's weird, but I was just thinking the other day that if Shonen Jump had an English-language print version, I would be more inclined to subscribe to it than at any point in the past decade. I've never been a big Naruto or One Piece fan, but between Dr. Stone, The Promised Neverland, and My Hero Academia, I'm really enjoying their current lineup.
