Reminds me of Zelda Ocarina of Time in the same situation.

I wonder if these game devs are just all pulling from the same cheap sound library.

Given the controversy surrounding the sample, makes me wonder why it is still used and/or available.
At least for that chanting sample, pretty much. Sample libraries I think are suppose to give musicians and the like a little extra something that might be outside their reach, so to speak. Also an excuse to share this video by Pop Fiction back when they attempted to figure out the source of the sample used in Zelda:OoT's Fire Temple and succeeded, and uncovered a lot more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U34MFcJdGCo&t=495s |

Free speech aside, why do they do this? Do they not have good quality control?

I am surprised the music industry in japan do not seem to have any kind of long term memory:

This Islamic chanting that was removed in Street Fighter V was also present in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time before it, too, was removed in later copies.

I would not necessarily say it was due to a lack of education or understanding of the Islamic faith. But Capcom's lack of understanding of religions and cultures in general. Remember, the location is a Buddhist Temple in Thailand, so the background should've been with Buddhist chanting. So they pulled it as not to offend either religion (or the government of Thailand). As far as I know, they just had a file labeled "chanting" and just slapped it on without thinking it was to a particular religion. So that music director likely looking for a new job about now. |

If they ARE taking from the same library, the fact that the library continues to exist means composers will continue to take samples from it. What's more surprising is that there hasn't been word going around between composers NOT to use that sound clip.
That's one of the thoughts I had too: Thailand DOES have a significant Muslim population, but the country is overwhelmingly Buddhist, so it's out of place for the visual theme. It'd be like having a stage in a video game based on New York City and then having Guatemalan music for it (provided it's not set in a Guatemalan community). You know, same continent, minority population. |

Eh, but it's a temple, and it's religious music, so... how about imagining your favourite selection from the anglican hymnal? Abide with me? Eternal Father strong to save? All things bright and beautiful? Blake's Jerusalem?? |

Yeah, Buddhist chanting would've been more appropriate. Oh well, I'm not really fussed, I care far more about the new characters.

Yeah, this makes about as much sense in the stage as Gregorian chants would.
Come on people, basic research. |

Hmm, I guess either not knowing how it's considered disrepectful or ignorance/"We can get away with it". I also wonder how frequent the sample is used. Some example of games that used the sample, there might be more. Cruis'n World (1998): Left alone it looks like. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998): Music track altered in later versions and future ports. Kakuto Chojin (2002): Pulled off shelves, never sold again. Street Fighter V (2016): Music track swapped out currently With Ocarina and Street Fighter V being one of the bigger or biggest releases for their time, you'd think they got the point, assuming there are no further examples between 1998-2017 (exception with Kakuto), or will in SF5's case. (Granted, news spread a lot faster now when comparing their respective release dates.) Last edited by omegafinal on Wed May 03, 2017 1:59 pm; edited 1 time in total |

It's funny because Thai and Arabic sound nothing alike. Even if you're unfamiliar with either language how do you make such a blunder? . What was the name of the sound file they took it from, 'chant'?

I'm still confused. But anyway, if this is supposed to be a Thailand stage then would make sense to have the correct chants (provided it's allowed) put in the stage. I guess when it comes to music it's okay to just mash it together, take something that sounds good, it works and no one really cares. But there's always going to be someone who's going to find it. Kind of what happened to that certain issue of X-men where some "questionable" messages tossed in.
Folks try and get it right. Be careful of what you use on a project. But I wonder if this was the case before and no one really paid attention. |
