Happy to say that one of those million tickets is mine. Fantastic movie. Totally deserves the success its had.

I can't help but find it a bit ironic that I saw this article literally standing right on top of the one saying Shinkai's latest movie had made ten times as much...
Personally I'm a lot more interested in this though, even if I am a bit worried that KyoAni might have toned down the darker elements that made the manga such a compelling read in the first place... |

Considering how KyoAni's single biggest cash-cow franchise film, the K-On! movie, ultimately made 1.93 billion at the box office and this movie is now like two thirds of the way to reaching that itself, and the fact that anime is in general a niche thing even in Japan... Yeah I'd say this movie is doing pretty decently. Oh sure it's getting well and truly pulverized by your name, but then that movie appears to be breaking all sorts of records for some reason I can't quite understand. (I've seen a few of Shinkai's movies... They were undeniably beautiful to look at but I don't feel they were all that interesting story-wise.) |

Yeah, I'm excited for both but it seems like A Silent Voice is being largely overshadowed by Your Name's continuing success. I'm not sure where the disparity comes from. Both look like more accessible family oriented, non-franchise anime films that aren't pandering to some niche market. Though it's still doing fairly well for itself, especially given the competition. |

The disparity comes from Your Name showing on 300+ screens whereas A Silent Voice is showing on 120 screens. More screens showing the movie means more money potential overall. I'm sure Your Name has a much greater advertising budget as well which is also paramount for a film's box office performance.

Your Name is not really family oriented though because got some ecchi/sexual elements in it. Like the boobs bouncing and groping "own" boobs. I'm still enjoying this but wont recommend it to any non-anime fan. |

It’s interesting to see that this is the way that box office is going for Silent Voice. I was kind of hoping that Your Name would leave audiences clamoring for more theatrically released non-tv series related anime films, but it looks like Your Name might just be a one-time thing that was best mostly for success of Shinkai’s future work.
And the thing is from a script standpoint I was actually more excited to see Silent Voice because the premise for Your Name sounded so tepid but I guess I’ll just reserve judgement on the movies until I see them (although evidently the close release dates might now leave the two in comparison, no matter how different they might be). |

I can think of plenty of "family films" that have elements like that, generally most of the ones that are rated PG for "rude humor." The "groping" kind of makes sense though, I'd imagine that's probably the first way most adolescent men trapped inside a girl's body would react.  I hope those "boob jiggles" you mention aren't too prevalent and blatant though, I've been a fan of Shinkai's works for years precisely because he generally stays away from that kind of low brow stuff. And I usually do show them to my non-anime watching friends.
Also, yeah, the missing the disparity between theater showings for both films was a pretty dumb oversight on my part.

The Average ticket price for Your Name suggest it appeal to large audience it is also doing well in the morning so it also have a lot of old people going to see it. |
