What´s with that "the (in)famous Akihabara district" line in the article??
Since when is Akihabara "infamous"?

That´s something one could read from a blind hater/ignorant in a forum, but to read it in an article from a manga-anime website... I don´t even know what to say.

Exactly. Akihabara is a famous landmark in Japan. It's the first that I've heard of it being infamous. Is there something that happened there that I'm not aware of? Laughing

Being a gaijin living in Japan who occasionally visit Akiha once a month I can say that it does deserve being number 1. Sure it's not as exaggerating as those pictures you find online but it isn't far from it. Aside from those figure shops and anime bookstores, they even promote 18+ porn, I mean right in front of the station there's a porn shop with an anime girl in the poster.

Maid cafes are all over the place, I remember walking down the streets and seeing a lot of maids and girls in cosplay giving flyers. Yeah and once I saw a Westerner in Sailor Moon clothes lol. And I don't want to talk about the toilet in SEGA arcade it was weird Embarassed

The Nishinomiya, Hyogo area doesn't seem to want to have any pictures up with its fame from the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise, but Ooarai, Ibaraki embraces Girls und Panzer.

The Osamu Tezuka museum in Takarazuka and the Ishinomaki manga museum might also qualify, along with the Ghibli Museum.

I visited Nakano Broadway during my trip to Japan back in June, and while it does, indeed, have a significant concentration of otaku-themed shops, the overwhelming majority (at least 80%, I'd estimate) are just ordinary businesses like you could find in any mall. Hence I think it's a big stretch to call it a primary otaku sacred site, but I could maybe see it being considered a secondary-level one.

Seriously? There's over 100 otaku themed shops in the complex with a couple of floors practically taken up by Mandarake specialty shops. Using your very limited criteria, only Akihabara might count as a primary otaku sacred site. Certainly Nipponbashi would get ruled out by your criteria.

Back to the article Osu is a weird choice as other than the local Mandarake store which is out behind the main shopping district (the main covered mall), I didn't see any other real otaku type shops except for a branch of Gamers. I was surprised that AruAru City in Kitakyushu didn't rate at all.
