And once again, GKIDS completely forgets that Memphis exists.

Looks like Disney has completely given up on Studio Ghibli.

Disney gave up on Ghibli once they learned that Hayao retired since he has their only real connection to them anyway. If this means more the lesser Ghibli movies get released so be it

Doesn't help that Ghibli has basically given up on itself, besides now that Disney's got Lucas Films they have bigger fish to fry.
I expected such results for an overseas theatre release. I don't think it was that big in Japan at the time either, simply because it more an adult type slice-of-life animation which very few western, non-anime following, or knowing, adults would except no matter how good it is.

Go figure...I just got my sweetie the Region 2 UK import for Christmas so of course now it's finally coming here.
That's what I get for not checking ANN first to see if there had been any new news

Great movie, Not a good release window with Star Wars in theaters.

Um, Disney just put out a massive Ghibli Blu-Ray collection. So they've far from given up on 'em. It's just that there's no big market for the artsy stuff from Ghibli. And if Kaguya hadn't gotten a nomination, then Only Yesterday would probably still be a Japan/Europe-only release. And GKIDS purposefully released Only Yesterday close to Star Wars, so they can cash in on the lead actress voicing the main character. It's called marketing.

I own this DVD which I bought ages ago. I live in Australia but still I was expecting this movie to have been released a few years ago in the US...

"Only Yesterday" isn't the type of movie for people with the attention span of 5 year old child. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
And $13,000 at one small theater for an opening weekend is pretty good. This isn't Star Wars we're talking about here, XXXXXX.

Got this on DVD when I lived in Abu Dhabi and it made me cry many tears. Really good , touching movie. I'm surprised to see it get any sort of theatrical release. You better believe I'll go see it when it hits Irvine.

I believe they had the rights for awhile but didn't release it (It did show late night on TMC about ten years ago during a Ghibli retrospective).
But really, It's not a movie for little kids. It's a difficult coming of age story that includes the experiences of a couple girl's first periods and MC's father slapping his girl really hard (I forget why now).
The only copy I had was copied off that old TMC viewing- so looking forward to seeing it again.

. More like the entire south (aside from Atlanta) I'd willingly travel two hours to Nashville just to see it in theaters!
