>art and animation that low
Really? It was an improvement over G and Wing and it still beats out Turn A. >sluggish pace I've seen sluggish pacing. KanColle has sluggish pacing. MOSPEADA has sluggish pacing. Macross in general has sluggish pacing. Turn A has sluggish pacing. IBO stopped time with its pacing. This on the other hand? Things happen, situations change, events occur frequently, action is constant, it is quick if anything. >cookie-cutter characters That is.... Eh, it's 50/50, gundam pilots and Tiffa are fine, the rest are understandable though. >predictable plot That is not a bad thing, not being a standard 20 years in the future isn't a story's fault. >Those Cs Would have went with As and Bs.... Which the Bodacious Space Pirates movie gets for some reason.... Did the review scores for both of those get switched by accident? |

Slow pace because the story is written that way, or slow pace like Wing where they needed to stretch the story out so it run until the next Gundam series premiered?

Oh damn, I forgot about Gundam X's release. I need to pick this up! I want to see what the official translation reads like for this since all I have are the old fansubs.

I think the art and animation is actually really good and an improvement over other Gundam shows (before and after). It's actually what made me want to watch the show in the first place aside from it being Gundam, it looks quite appealing.
I'll be fair and say that the story doesn't stand out and is not one of the show's stronger points, but still it's not bad. The pacing I have no problem with. Hoping to be able and buy this sooner than later, I'm seriously happy we can finally get it on DVD. Also, not trying to complain too much, but what's with all the '90's' this and '90's' that in the review? |

All my friends have told me X is arguably the best AU series, but the viewership ratings were low when it first came out so it got cut a bit short towards the end, and despite this, again they still say it's the best. I ordered both X and ZZ sets a few days ago so I'm waiting on them to arrive in full. I haven't quite had the same faves when it comes to Gundam than them so far (most notably that I'm the one person of my online friends to love let alone LIKE ZZ) but I still trust them. Recently got through the first season of 00 which took a fairly big nosedive half way through it and I hear season 2 is worse which I'm dreading, then I got IBO which I hear is a bit divisive, Wing which I had the first half of from Bandai but haven't seen it in years and then this. I'll honestly be surprised if X is on par with or worse than 00 and Seed, I highly doubt it, so I think it'll be alright.

Why do I get the feeling that there's going to be a GIGANTIC divide between what Lauren thinks and what people on the thread think? If I had a major complaint it would have to be with the recycled mecha design. The X is nothing new for main Gundams (at least until it gets the Divider upgrade), the Airmaster is the Wing Gundam with a paint job, Leopard is the same but with Heavy Arms, and the Virsago is Altron but admittedly with a sweet chest cannon. Taking old Gundam designs as bases and doing tweaks to them to make something new is established in the franchise, but this was admittedly shameless. Animation can also slump here and there, but it's not like that was anything new for its immediate predecessors.
And of course there's Olba, but he's a complex issue (even with Nozomu Sasaki from what I hear). But what can ya do, it's Gundam; with a franchise going on this long opinions and analyses will rarely line up. Also, it's interesting at how many VAs got their big break/debut in this series. Like Wataru Takagi as Garrod, Mika Kanai as Tiffa, Yumi Kakazu as Sara, and Kazuya Nakai as Witz. |

Other Gundam spin-off shows are usually pretty divided in terms of opinions, but with X the majority of fans seem to like it. |

Actually it's pretty much the only Gundam series that is universally loved by the fandom. You might get heated arguments about the quality of SEED or Turn A, even Zeta, but not X. Personally it's my favourite Gundam series. It was the 2nd one I watched after Wing and I adored it, particularly the characters. After the robotic nature of Heero Garrod was a welcome change. I also like how underneath it all it's not a war drama, but a personal one about a kid just trying to protect the girl he likes. |

G is definitely the most fun AU I've seen so far. It goes against what Gundam is, sure, but it's still got a lot of heart, silliness and badassery, it's hard to hate. |

Not the latter; after Gundam X ended, there wasn't another Gundam tv series for three years.
It's almost like they were reviewed by different people, with different standards and preferences. Also, very curious how you're going to sit there and claim these designs merit an A in art. |

Every Gundam series has to have at least 3 awful looking mech designs. And boy are those awful. |

Well first >not gundams >one is the main grunt of the series Second I find them awesome, awesome, and awesome respectively. Colors, proportions, combat capabilities, uses, intimidation, endurance, and whatever else. Finding bad mech designs in anime is like finding Mongolian Death Worms: They're extremely rare and go unreported, but it does invoke imagination (granted not as good as the Tremors franchise in this case). Plus finding bad designs from high quality studios like Sunrise, Toei, Xebec, Dynamic, etc. also reduces the odds; top that off with franchises like Gundam, Macross, VOTOMS, Patlabor, etc. having clean records of no bad designs and, well, yeah. |

Though admittedly two of those are just one-episode designs while another is a main grunt. The worst I can say about the recurring suits is that they lack imagination (though weirdly that makes sense in-universe as the Gundams were mass-produced in the After War timeline) |

Newtype and mysticism was always the part that I liked the least (actually I flat out disliked it) in gundam, so making an entire series out of it doesn't sound very good... On top of that sentient dolphin really make it seems like its the least serious of any gundam, even on top of ZZ!

I should clarify: I don't consider these "terrible" designs, just not worthy of an "A" rating. The Wise Wallaby is an extremely forgettable commander type suit, and the mecha-of-the-week enemies feel like rejected designs for OZ Zodiac grunt suits - nothing about their aesthetic conveys "experimental" to me the way a Rig-Contio or Asshimar does.
Overall, though, I enjoy the series enough to own several gunpla of the main suits. |
