Eguchi may be a small part of the reason, but the main reason has always been Square Enix.

The quality hunter x hunter maintains is amazing. On the contrary : Naruto had completely fallen for me. Bleach has been dragged out and could have ended by quite a bit earlier (no not the aizen fight, the quincy arc is amazing but still drawn out) and one piece, while very entertaining, is the most dragged out Shonen I have witnessed yet.
With that being said, I believe that what you call laziness, is time togashi can think things through and get inspiration. Yes he's not getting younger but I enjoy his series so much that I'd rather have it not reach a conclusion but have its amazingness kept than become garbage.

I'm fairly certain that an official reason was never given until the most recent hiatus where back pain was cited.
Seeing as other mangaka with chronic health issues can manage a more consistent schedule than Togashi's, and he's talked about wanting more personal time for his hobbies in the past, I'd say people are not wrong when they call him lazy. You certainly aren't going to be having another mangaka like Eguchi saying that they taught Togashi to be lazy by their example if it's well known he has genuine health issues.
Though the reality is likely that Togashi considers making HxH more of a hobby than a job. Thus he works on it when he feels like working on it.

No, chronic back pain is serious shit. One's person's problem is not the same as another. And if you factor what Togashi has been saying in Jump since he came back, it was so bad tat he couldn't get out of bed most days.

Whatever the reason it may be, laziness or chronic blabla, I stopped collecting more than 30 volumes and that's final until it gets finished. I am more incline to say he's lazy. He's been healthy in some of his latest photos but that's assuming the source is credible. Otherwise, I am going to believe that his Dragon Quest addiction is the one to be credit for all this expletive hiatuses.

I like how when there is more evidence against the lazy claims, people are still more inclined to go with that because they're upset.

@GrayArchon
At this point I completely agree with the statement I quoted especially after hearing a youtube fan of Togashi read an article that pretty much supports this view.

One shouldn't underestimate the stress an artist's body goes through. I follow an artist who overworked her hand trying to make a deadline and went on hiatus for a year, she's back now but her hand still isn't 100%.
Even if it wasn't back pain (which I believe it is now), I agree with this guy that it's illogical for artists to be expected to do weekly updates, I don't know how they do it. That kinda strict schedule isn't conductive for inspiration. I believe for artists to make truly good work, they have to be able to work at their own pace so their creativity isn't stunted.

I'm still waiting for the unmatched hiatus master Kazushi Hagiwara to resume Bastard!!'s serialization. Next to him, Yoshihiro Togashi looks like Hiro Mashima.

I'm finding the accusations of laziness rather unpalatable.
Even if he was playing Dragon Quest, so what? He doesn't owe you anything...

Back pain isn't something to be messed with, especially if it's chronic! If that doesn't get managed soon, this artist might not be able to stand again, ever.
It's pretty easy to assumed someone is lazy if you don't exclusively know who he is, what he does, what sort of conditions/sickness he used or may still suffered through, e.t.c e.t.c..Nonetheless, I'm just hoping he will get better and continued doing whatever he preferred.

Didn't Kazushi Hagiwara suffer from a degenerative eye condition that was slowly leaving him blind? Jeez, people sure get pissed when artists aren't production monkeys on chains.
Buzz201 and Afezeria are right, these artists don't owe us jack. They could cancel their manga tomorrow, it's their perogative. (Heck, we don't pay them: Shonen Jump does. We just pay Shonen Jump.)
