Otaku Varification Exam.

11-16-06 (1:15PM EST)---- Academic Style Exam To Test Anime Knowledge
A first of its kind effort in Japan, the "Zenkoku Sougou Anime Bunka Chishiki Kentei Shiken" (Nationwide, Integrated Anime Cultural Knowledge Permissibility Test) has officially been unveiled by the Anime Verification Executive Committee. To be held in partnership with the Tokyo Anime Center in 2007, the "Anime Verification" test (for short as its being called) will assay the overall Japanese animation cultural knowledge of participants through a wide vareity of questions. e-book Japan and Mainichi Newspapers will sponsor the effort. The examination can be taken through cellphone and written means. Composed of 6 stages, and a series of classes and tests, the 1st-5th tests will require personal attention, by going to 1 of 5 testing facilities around Japan. The 6th can be taken via cellphone for free. Look for the project to surface in the spring of 2007, being completed around Fall of the same year. An application charge of around 3000 Yen will be charged for tests 1-5. A textbook will be sold in the spring. An official website will be forthcoming next year. Through the organizers, ANS has learned an English version may be prepared in the future.

*Kidding, kidding, though I do find it somewhat disheartening that they are taking it THIS seriously. I mean, not even Trekkies have this, and they're supposed to be much sadder than Otaku, aren't they? Ahh I just don't get the world no mores

Aye! Tis a funny ol' place, Japan. But you're not far wrong there. I mean to what purpose is there even an "Anime Varification Executive Committee". How does one get on to that? I can just visualise some salaryman type going round the video shops inspecting the VHS cassettes, and DVDs to make sure it is genuine anime. I love how they're making them travel round the country to take the different exams. I'm surprised they didn't stipulate no public transport, or private vehicles can be used between the different test places. Sort of like one of those Japanese reality shows where they inflict pain and suffering to test the contestants " I'm an Otaku, get me out of here!"

Oddly enough, anyone who passes an otaku verification exam still fails.

I feel bad for the real otaku out there. Their homeland, Akihabara, is now a tourist attraction for foreigners who think otaku are a whole different species of mankind (Refer: Densha Otoko special).
