ANS wrote: | 11-16-06 (1:15PM EST)---- Academic Style Exam To Test Anime Knowledge
A first of its kind effort in Japan, the "Zenkoku Sougou Anime Bunka Chishiki Kentei Shiken" (Nationwide, Integrated Anime Cultural Knowledge Permissibility Test) has officially been unveiled by the Anime Verification Executive Committee. To be held in partnership with the Tokyo Anime Center in 2007, the "Anime Verification" test (for short as its being called) will assay the overall Japanese animation cultural knowledge of participants through a wide vareity of questions. e-book Japan and Mainichi Newspapers will sponsor the effort. The examination can be taken through cellphone and written means. Composed of 6 stages, and a series of classes and tests, the 1st-5th tests will require personal attention, by going to 1 of 5 testing facilities around Japan. The 6th can be taken via cellphone for free. Look for the project to surface in the spring of 2007, being completed around Fall of the same year. An application charge of around 3000 Yen will be charged for tests 1-5. A textbook will be sold in the spring. An official website will be forthcoming next year. Through the organizers, ANS has learned an English version may be prepared in the future. |
Doesn't say if a certificate is received after successfully completing and passing the test. One would expect something to show off to the others when one hosts a dinner party.

Great, now you can receive an authentic, Japanese-language certificate of authenticity that you are a complete failure who needs to go outside more. *
*Kidding, kidding, though I do find it somewhat disheartening that they are taking it THIS seriously. I mean, not even Trekkies have this, and they're supposed to be much sadder than Otaku, aren't they? Ahh I just don't get the world no mores

Aye! Tis a funny ol' place, Japan. But you're not far wrong there. I mean to what purpose is there even an "Anime Varification Executive Committee". How does one get on to that? I can just visualise some salaryman type going round the video shops inspecting the VHS cassettes, and DVDs to make sure it is genuine anime. I love how they're making them travel round the country to take the different exams. I'm surprised they didn't stipulate no public transport, or private vehicles can be used between the different test places. Sort of like one of those Japanese reality shows where they inflict pain and suffering to test the contestants " I'm an Otaku, get me out of here!"

I can picture it now, row upon row of shelves without DVD's...a non-maid cafe...and a personal fitness instructor!

Considering the entire country relies on their public transport services (cars are more of a luxury than a nessecity, as there is much, much less space), and that Otaku would spend all of their money on Anime and crap (You know, I wish I were overexaguraing(SP?)) and wouldn't generally have a car, it's not such a big suprise.

Good heavens. As if fandom wasn't already elitist enough. Now we'll have people waving test scores and certificates in each other's faces.

I feel bad for the real otaku out there. Their homeland, Akihabara, is now a tourist attraction for foreigners who think otaku are a whole different species of mankind (Refer: Densha Otoko special). Otakudom is becoming commercialized and capitalized; as stupid as this sounds I bet it'll be very profitable, at least for a short time. Now otaku will just be another trend for companies to take advantage of, selling otaku-wear, otaku-gear, and all that other crap that they're doing for practically every social identity.
/Sheds a fake tear... I'd laugh after that but I didn't bother reading the article

Mmm, maybe people who want to say that are genuinely certified... though maybe not certified otaku... just plain certified.
I can see the topics now... Look! I'm right! I have an otaku certificate saying so! Don't mess with me!

Oddly enough, anyone who passes an otaku verification exam still fails.

I could have sworn I heard this sometime before... Really doesn't matter to me either way... don't know why people get so worked up about this...

I haven't seen that special yet... There are more foreigners there than some other places, but they're so spread out you don't ever see them... I only ran into about a total of 10-15 during a stay of 5-6 hours there... 99% of the people there are still Japanese (or some form of Asian). So it doesn't seem like a tourist attraction to me... at least, not yet...

An otaku verification exam? Now I've read everything!
Looks like the Trekkies will end up pushing for an official Star Trek exam if we get this here anytime soon (If we haven't already.).

Depends, how many Otaku regularly dress up, roleplay in real life simulations, have or attend Anime weddings (where everyone dresses up), and eventually become obsessed with one character so much that they are commited to a mental institution? ...
For that matter, what is this country doing with all those Elvis impersonators? Something's got to give...

Hearing about this reminds me of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Just wait. I'll bet that in the near future, there'll even be schools where you go to learn about anime, and the dorms there- Fullmetal Alchemist Blue(The best dorm to get into), Hellsing Red(Second best), and Dragonball Z Yellow(The worst). And can you just imagine what a teacher there would say? "You will call me professor. I have a PHD in anime, thank you very much." I mean if there's verification exams, then there'll defineatly be anime schools.
