So WOM was actually strong enough for Japanese viewers to push BH 6 to #1, eh? Interesting. I totally thought they would avoid it, because they already have their own anime, and it'd just be a novelty to them, at best. I guess that theory about how the recent lack of mecha anime's made them willing to try even our stuff might hold some water. Poor bastards are clearly robot-deprived.

Nice to see Big Hero 6 taking #1 in Japan, and I like to add a congrat to Yokai Watch for doing well in Japan.

I think some people's proclamations that Big Hero 6 was a disappointment in Japan just because it didn't open at #1 were very premature.
It won't even get close to Frozen, a once-in-a-decade performer, but, assuming these charts on the BoxOffice.com forums are accurate, Big Hero 6 is already the 45th highest-earning animated feature film in Japanese box office history and the fourth highest-earning Disney Feature Animation film. The first is obviously Frozen by an incredibly large margin, number 2, with less than a fifth what Frozen earned over there is, and I have a hard time believing this myself, Dinosaur, and the third is Aladdin. |

Yes, I always knew that Big Hero 6 would take the top spot and it's a good thing that the reception among Japanese audiences is very positive and with Japan being known for having an incredibly leggy market, I am expecting a very long solid run there! Sure, it may not be as big as Frozen was in Japan but moving into second place where it could beat Dinosaur as the second highest grossing Disney film ever in Japan is something to not scoff at.

I still haven't seen it yet because most of the response was a tepid "ehhhh". Oh well, there's always rental if I don't catch it at the last theater still showing it near me (it's already in their tiny auditorium, and by tiny I mean 43 seats. The seats are recliners though!)

walw: If you've seen your fair share of anime, you ain't gonna be impressed. But I guess people who haven't seen it all before, or want mecha mascots again, seem to dig it.

That's a very suspect theory considering the Iron Man movie only grossed 8 million in Japan. I sincerely doubt Big Hero 6 fills a "robot-deprived" void. Movies like Iron Man and Big Hero 6 are nothing like mecha anime to begin with. BH6 is a children's movie seen mostly by children, not otaku. And considering the popular mecha anime out right now, I think it's faulty to say anyone is robot deprived over there to begin with. I see more praise and popularity for Gundam Build Fighters than I do than Big Hero 6. I think you're getting carried away there. |

Guile: Yeah, the first one only did ok over there. But the WOM has helped make the series very successful in Japan. At least by Marvel movie standards, anyway.
Gundam Build Fighters is cock-fighting with Gundam. It's not a 'traditional' mecha show. |

I have no idea what Yokai Watch is really about, so could someone explain to me whether or not it has anything to do with actual watches?

It's a family movie seen mostly by families and dates. Disney is a family brand in Japan, e.g. even older family members like to go to Tokyo Disneyland (a lot of J-girls celebrate their Seijin no Hi, Coming-of-Age (Age 20), ceremony there - yes, they celebrate their entry into adulthood....... at Disneyland). |

Keita finds a watch in a gashapon machine that lets him see and communicate with youkai. Along with the spirit butler Whisper he goes around dealing with various youkai monsters who are inhabiting his town and stops them from doing mischievous things. while befriending them and gaining the ability to summon them to help him out. It's the biggest thing with kids in Japan right now. |

To be fair, that Japan animation box office list from which the Walt Disney Animation Studios sub-list was made only covers 1980-onwards. I presume Japanese box office data for Disney films prior to 1980 is unreliable. But, still, yeah, I have trouble comprehending how Dinosaur could possibly have been the most popular non-Pixar Disney animated film of the past 35 years until Frozen more than quintupled Dinosaur's Japanese box office. Then again, Peter Pan 2: Return to Neverland almost made as much as Tangled at the Japanese box office, so the Japanese audience can be... unpredictable... in which films they embrace. If it makes you feel better, at least Big Hero 6 will likely surpass Dinosaur for the animated Disney second place spot. |

You're right. Actually, not only that but Tokyo Disney allow this: First Lesbian Couple Get Married At Tokyo Disney Resort Anyways as mentioned, it's their family brand - it doesn't stop just at children. |
