I am a huge fan of Bang Dream I love first season and I have been playing the mobile game since it launched in April and also bought a bunch of Bang Dream merchandise but I can't stand the animation of the second season, I can't watch it.
I can't think of another anime that looks like crap as this does. I watched as much of the first episode as I could stand, its hard to explain but the scene was all over the place like they were trying to show all 25 band members in the first episode then have a plot. |

And Sentai screwing it up in their typical fashion by changing or dropping character catchphrases/quirks entirely in the subtitles

I'll probably repeat this comment when Preview Guide starts, but the thing that I took away from this episode is that rather than being a direct follow-on to the first season, this seems to be squarely aimed at fans of the mobile game (or who have engaged with the wider franchise in some other way). It drops you straight into a Pastel*Palettes TV performance, then later the other four bands play a joint gig together, all seemingly knowing one another, and even leaning hard on established character bits, like Kaoru's goofy theatrical poses in the background during a dialogue scene.
Oh sweetie, do you even know what it was like to be a Wake Up, Girls! fan when their second season hit? |

^ The game doesn’t have animation that looks like crap.
I know I can’t believe they did that to Wake up Girls, at least the animation wasn’t bad. I am a Wake Up Girls fan by the way that has yet to want to watch the second season. |

Mhh... still don't understand all the hate on the animation. I think it actually looks pretty good. Not much of a plot in the first episode since they used it just to show all the bands. I hope they will start with the next one.

I dunno, I like the animation style better than that of the first season. Sure, the 3D CGI style needs some getting used to, but it was better than the poor proportions on faces from season 1 and all that. What seems to me to need more getting used to is not hearing Akeshan's Rinko, what with her retiring from the role due to hearing loss. Also yeah, Sentai dropping established translations of character quirks (Kaoru's "hakanai" not being Fleeting, Hina's "lun" not being boppin' and so forth) has led to some complaints. Hopefully, it'll get fixed the next time they show up. And yeah, this seems to be something you definitely need to have played the game before to get into. Season 1 was just PoPiPa's story, and I'm glad they didn't rehash it in GBP, but in order to know who the people in the other 4 (soon to be 5 with Raise A Sullen included) bands are, you need to have played the game. Again, glad they didn't waste too much time to introduce those characters; this episode kinda served as an abbreviated introduction for them and likely they'll need more introduction for the RAS characters instead. |

Ok, not knowing anything about the game I can say the first episode of the second season was pretty much excellent with each band getting their own directorial flourishes... like the band with the mascot's lead singing getting so many Fourth Wall breaks that I couldn't help thinking "Yes, the camera's here but the audience is to your left, look at them." and the last band getting the Extreme... Dramatic... Closeups together with dark moody lighting.
The performance that started the episode had terrible looking CG with bland direction but to compare that to Wake Up Girls? I couldn't even make it through Wake Up Girls' cheap introduction short movie, let alone the second or even first season. It got WORSE or did it just get to a point where people couldn't make excuses? Because the movie had an awful two minute walk plus cycle that was an insult to the term "animation" where even Hanna Barbara would look at it and say "You know, we don't have to go that cheap... Rotate the background at least" |

I know I have been saying the "animation" but I really mean the CG of the character designs.

In the second season of WUG!, things got so bad that instead of actually animating some of the concert performances, they just did a Ken Burns Effect over still pictures. Multiple times. Example: https://twitter.com/invalidname/status/927662258708271105 The other thing they did was to choose bizarre shot compositions that obscured the person speaking, so they wouldn’t even have to animate the lip flap. Or they’d even have a one minute conversation inside the talent agency office, and just show the outside window while doing the entire scene in voice-over, so it didn’t require any animation at all. So yeah, as much as CG Pastel*Palettes looked kind of plastic and weird, I’ve seen way, way worse. |

That was pretty fantastic and this is from one who has never seen the game but loved the first season. The first minute or two has some ugly cgi design that make the band members look like dolls but then its off to the races with dazzling design choices. I like being put in media res with all the bands performing a live show. Nice insight into band culture and little interactions between members, this looks like a fantastic season is in store. No comparison to the train wreck that was Wake Up Girls Season 2. They had a wonderful cast but the production company didn't know what they were doing with the turmoil and firing of Yutaka Yamamoto - it showed up in the quality of the presentation. The first couple episodes were ok but then the animation quality started getting poorer and poorer to the effect that it drew attention to itself and broke the suspension of disbelief. I really liked Wake up Girls alot but man, it was painful how it kept on getting worse. I haven't even been able to go back and rewatch any episodes. Let it live valiantly on in memory I suppose.

@invalidname Lol, this is pretty smart. I think if they tried to pass it off as the “observer position” popular with Otaku, then no one would have noticed it at all. However, Liz and RS worked much better with such directing.

The start with PasuPare being on the eh side aside, the rest turned out pretty well I thought. The last two performances matched their IRL gigs in body language well enough that I'm thinking they were at least partially motion captured.

I tried to watch Band Dream season 2 again, Now that I know what to expect I was able to watch the whole episode. I have to get used to the CGI, I outright rejected the anime as soon as I started watching it the other day. I guess It is ok I will watch the anime for now but still going to say the CGI looks like crap.

Yeah, I've seen the comparison shots with Roselia and their last couple of concerts. I didn't even notice it the first time time I watched despite going to the DV for 5th Live last year. Also, Kaoru's posing was amazing. Now if only HIDIVE could fix their subs and get use the "Fleeting" we deserve. |
