Oh boy, I guess future anime con will screen any DJ or potential employees and volunteers on their criminal background check in the future.

Police were contacted and Shotwell was arrested and let go on conditional release. |

I wouldn't call this a very reputable con already after Artist Alley GarageCon, and the fact that their statements have been increasing in comedy and passing the blame only shows what gems these people are.

So... It's been more than 2 months since the incident, did King County decide not to prosecute him or something? Why does the headline not read "Repeat Offender Back on Trial?"

Holy, I had heard a bit about this but this is even worse, especially how Aki-Con is responding to all of it.

The complete and utter lack of accountability on the part of Aki Con with regards to this incident is both despicable and unacceptable. The people who are responsible for that con should be ashamed of themselves.

I can't believe that the con isn't taking more actions and beefing up security . I really don't see in this day of age that they don't do back ground checks

They say "Though some of these other conventions and events did hire him, Aki Con did not." Yet he is still on their guests page: http://akicon.org/guests (Screenshot, in case they take that down too)
That's carefully worded and maybe they did not give him cash, but I'd bet they gave him at least a free pass and probably discounted the hotel room or gave it to him free. Also, he was a moderator on their forums: screenshot |

Since when are conventions required to complete background checks. Most anime conventions are not money making events. You might as well make it law that all companies and organizations complete background checks on all employees, temps, volunteers, and any other of the sundry list of types of work. Then we all can enjoy paying for these background checks in higher prices, and higher ticket prices too.
If the crime happened at Aki Con, then their liability is determined by whether they are negligent or not. Just because they didn't do a background check doesn't make them negligent. If it happened at the hotel room, well, it is not Aki Con's fault. |

No but Aki con and other anime conventions could be under fire for this after this news breakout. Also because of this, I don't know how many fans will be scared to go because of this news, that and the parents of the teenage anime fans won't let them go if this news get out. |

Where did ANN sourced their legal blurb at the bottom? Did they ask some qualified professional or consulted some website that did something like that?

1) Until he gets convicted a second time, you can't call him a "repeat offender". 2) From what I understand, the trial date is set for February. These things take time, unlike what is shown on TV.
Security? What security? I've never known them to have anything resembling security, considering I know people who have never bought a badge, attended the con, and never even been asked to see a badge. And the single year I regrettably attended, hardly anyone had badges. As for problems I have with the statement/article
Interesting that they say that he wasn't "hired", when he had been listed as a Guest of Honor on their site, and did (from accounts) perform at the event. Additionally, he was a staff member of the convention, working as their message board moderator.
I wasn't aware that the end of October was "just days" after the beginning of July (Everfree, a MLP event, was over the July 4th weekend).
ANN, there is a difference between a registered member (Sakura-Con is a membership organization, hence members, not attendees), and Guests of Honor. As Sakura-Con no longer lists their pre-reg list on-site, there is no reason for someone to be listed on the site when all they're doing is attending and maybe running a panel or two. The only people on the Past Guests list are actual Guests of Honor who have been invited to the con. |
