Hi Zac,

I'm a current intern for animenewsnetwork.com, is it still possible for me to apply for this position?

Thanks,

Lynzee

Uhh, it'd probably be best to PM or e-mail Zac rather than asking in a public forum. Confused

^ Yes this, also if there are any age restrictions if anyone else is planning to apply.

When the listing is taken down, the position has been filled. There's no deadline but if you're interested you should apply ASAP. I already have a small mountain of applications.

I can't hire anyone under 18, but the call is very specifically for experienced writers, so unless there's a very special case out there, that kinda cancels out people under a certain age.

Lissa Patillo has stepped down. No further questions on this issue will be answered.

Oh sorry, I didn't think it was a super personal question, I just wanted to make sure there wouldn't be a duty conflict. I'll e-mail him Smile

That's too bad! The other guest was a little talkative so Lissa had a hard time getting a word in but I thought she was really good on the recent "Pop Vulture" ANNCAST.

I also thought her news report on the Funimation panel at last year’s Anime North was more detailed and informative than the reporting done for a much more recent convention. Some of your staff may feel cons get repetitive, but for people like me that are not attending getting that extra little bit of information is nice. Saying things like "which featured a lot of the standards" might be worse than not saying anything at all.

Er, to clarify, she's stepped down as a manga critic for us, but of course we'll be inviting her back on ANNCast when the occasion merits, and convention reporting isn't out either.

At any rate none of this is really pertinent to the thread or the position, so let's get back on topic.

Truthfully, this position sounds like it would be interesting as I read manga every day and write every day.

I don't have a degree in writing per say, but I have taken college writing classes and write nearly every day, so I guess you could say I am experienced. I've probably written over 60 papers though, some ranging from 3 pages to 15 pages.

Sounds quite interesting and considering I've been a member here for years, I am going to give this a shot.

If we haven't reviewed manga before, what kind of samples should we send? Short book reports from college, school newspaper articles from high school? Should we write up a review to send in to show you how we'd handle it?

In the interest of being straightforward and completely upfront, I should point out that I wrote the job listing and listed that we were looking for an "experienced writer". If you've never written a manga review before and would need to submit high school newspaper articles as your writing samples, I have to say, you might not want to bother with this one.

Sounds like those with blogging or book reviewing experience to link to would be the best sort of candidates.

This sounds like a dream for me but I haven't built up the platform. Sad Oh well. I don't actually have the time anyway. But I look forward to more manga reviews!

You might want to add that the opening is for North America citizens / legal permanent residents only (I'd assume that rule applies to all staff openings), unless "Review material will be provided" in electronic form, which is very unlikely as copyright and distribution regulations may apply.

Actually, digital review copies are extremely commonplace for comic book companies, as it's far easier and cheaper for them to upload a PDF onto an FTP site where all reviewers can access it than to mail physical copies to dozens of addresses all over the country. Of manga companies, for example, Digital Manga Publishing (perhaps unsurprisingly) does all their review material digitally, and Dark Horse offers the option of digital review copies as well. Plenty of publishers do still only offer print review copies, though, so your point about the writer being North America-based is probably still valid, though.
