Does anyone else on these forums like manwha (Korean comics)? Personally, one of my all-time favorite series is President Dad. I love it because it has great art and lovable characters. But I also love it because it gives me a look at South Korean society from both a students perspective and a political perspective. One of the things I love about manga is how it gives you a view into a different culture and it's the same with manwha (though I realize anything I find in a comic I should take with a grain of salt, rather than think that's how the people of that country always act).
Getting back to President Dad, I like how the author addresses South Korea's current concerns with their neighbor to the north. I've always wondered what the atmosphere in South Korea is like, living so close to a society that is so different. I wonder if the people who live there get nervous. Does anyone else out there like President Dad? I don't hear a lot of buzz about it but it's a great book. I dare you to not love the main character Ami. Does anyone here read any other good manwha? I used to read Rebirth but lost interest during the whole flashback storyline. If you do have a series to recommend, let me know why you like it. Thanks! |

I have fourteen volumes of Priest an awesome horror western by Min-Woo Hyung. Great story, artwork and characters, controversial themes, cowboys and indians fighting zombies, Vatican assassins and fallen angels... I could go on.
Some chums of mine on another board I frequent have been raving about Island, so I guess I'll check that out. Last edited by Alucalb on Fri May 19, 2006 9:05 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I've really enjoyed reading Queen's Knight (released by Tokyopop). It's an interesting fantasy story, although the volumes are coming out rather slowly in English, and I'm not sure why.
Other than that I've had relatively little experience with manhwa. I'm certainly not opposed to it or anything, but I haven't found myself to be interested in many of the series currently available to me. I also admit I haven't exactly been looking for many new series to start. ~Shadrach Anki |

I like a cute manhwa called Chocolat. It is about a girl who is in love with a certain biy band, but she can't join th efan club. Instead, she joins another boy band's fan club as an official, so she can get close to her favorite boy band.
I also recommend INVU. Great art and interesting characters. |

I've read the first volume of The Queen's Knight and it was enjoyable. I plan on eventually picking up the next volume, to see how it is and whether I want to continue picking the series up (I am collecting far too many things as it is though)

I like manhwa but I still like manga better. My favorite manhwa is Goong. I can't wait until it's released in the US. I just started reading Queen's Knight and I think it's really funny and very well drawn. I also enjoy Honey Mustard and I can't wait for the next volume to come out.

I enjoyed Demon Diary and Priest (Priest being one of the only horror series I like), but most of the manwha I've seen a very derivative and unoriginal, much like Tokyopop's Global Manga. Neck and Neck, another Tokyopo manwha, happens to be one of my least favorite graphic novels in history. I just hated all the characters, and the main character’s narration was horridly obnoxious, like the author was trying to be tongue-in-cheek and spunky but had never met an actual teenager to model her character's speaking patterns on in her life.

I do like Mawha, and two books that I have waiting for have just recently come out: Chocolat and Bring it on volumes two. I really like them, and while I am reading I don't even notice that it isn't Japanese or American. But the new books have bigger pages than normal, is that just to be recognized from all of the other graphic novels?

I read Ares, which I believe is manwha...it's pretty good.
Shin Angyo Onshi is partially manwha, and I enjoy it as well. I say "partially" because it is written in Korean by a Korean and is based on Korean folk tales, but is drawn by a Japanese artist. |

Goong is my favorite manhwa too. Although the manhwa-ga has a bit of a problem with perspectives and body proportions she does cover it up with a distinctive and interesting style. Chae's character design is really good, and looks its best during the more dramatic moments. On the other hand it can be a bit jarring when the fugly chibi-versions of characters pop up to add a bit of humor. Storywise it's interesting how the manhwa-ga takes every little girl's Cinderella dream and turns it into a suffocating tale of repressed emotions spiced with palace intrigue. In addition there's something doubly exotic about Goong. It's very Korean (unlike many other manhwa which have stories indistinguishable from manga) and set in the closed world of royalty. I really love how elements of western and eastern royal traditions are fused to create what could have been a modern Korean monarchy if it had survived the upheavals of the 20th century.
Goong was also turned into a 24-part Korean drama which just exudes class. The art in the manhwa might not be the best but the drama series is certainly up to the highest standards. The story is more or less the same, i.e. just as engaging. Well worth a watch if you know where to get the fansubs. |

I'll read anything as long as has a good plot line and clean artistry. Country of orgin means naught to me. Of the Korean manwha I know I really enjoyed reading Bring It On the most. I haven't gotten around to the other titles by the new company Danbi.
One the flip side, I thought Saint Maria was a total bust. Yech. |

Sure I enjoy some manwha. I have read Ragnarok and Priest which were both good in their own ways. I also tried stuff like Under the Glass Moon and Island which didn't quite cut it for me.
Why do I enjoy these series? Pretty much for the same reasons I enjoy manga. These are comics, very similar to some of their Japanese counterparts in terms of story and artwork (haven't seen anything quite like Priest though). To be honest, I didn't know some of the titles I've been into were manwha before it was pointed out. |

I love manwha. I really enjoyed Kiss Me Kill Me and Demon Diary. Apparently the creator made a new series Angel Diary which has been released in english over here.
I also enjoyed INVU but I don't think it'll ever be fininshed. |
