I know posting here will probably be my best bet for a good, solid answer. I'm looking at two products, Azumanga Daioh the thin-pak five-disc class album set for 45 bucks, and then Excel Saga the Imperfect Collection 6-disc for 70 bucks. I know one is quite a bit more expensive than the other, but I'd like to clarify which one is funnier. I have been told about both and both sound hilarious.
Which one should I get? Oh, and also, I've seen that right stuf.com or whatever often has the lowest price on these sets, but I don't exactly trust them...does anyone here purchase from them often? If so, would you recommend the site for me if I want the sets for cheaper? |

I recommend excel saga for $60 http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=ADV007162
I think it's funnier, better characters, story, and it doesn't annoy the hell out of me(srry azu fans). Dont forget to check out puni puni poemy.http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=ADV007292 |

I normally either buy from Amazon.com or Best Buy...most other sites I don't fully trust because I've mostly never used them. I need confirmation that what I'm paying for on that deep discount site it the full set, new, and delivered quickly to my door. Otherwise, I'd rather pay the extra bucks for a safe bet.

Personally, I only found Excel Saga to be funny about half of the time. The entire point of that show is basically non-stop, in your face, balls to the wall parody, which is great for the first five-ish episodes. But after that, the non-stop barrage of it begins to wear thin, and by that time it's really only great when they do something really clever or parody an anime you're actually familiar with. Outside of those two instances, it just falls flat on its face.
Azumanga Daioh, personally, I found to be consistently funny throughout. It was less hyperactive, and relied more on a decent mix of wit, wordplay, and slapstick than a non-stop hailstorm of parody, parody, screaming parody. It also didn't rely on the same joke over and over again, whereas Excel Saga got a little too into doing "Hyatt dies," "Menchi is food," and "Ilpalazzo kills Excel" gags ad nauseum. Plus the characters are just more likable. Both shows are good, but if you ask me, Azumanga Daioh is still miles ahead of Excel Saga. |

SEconded, Azumanga is the type of show you'll watch time and time again so you are getting more value for a smaller price. Excel is good and all but Azu is superior.

I find Excel Saga to have its hilarious moments, but Azumanga Daioh has priority because its a show with humor and drama. Its a slice of life show, while Excel Saga uses raunchy and nonesensical humor. Hell get both, but its your scrapped for money, buy Azumanga Diaoh.

I'd say Azumanga Daioh definitely. It's cheaper, has a nicer artbox, and has better humor. I honestly thought Excel Saga tried too hard and because of that a lot of the jokes were predictable and lame. The animation quality was also very lacking in many parts. They both have different kinds of humor, but I think Azumanga Daioh is more widely appreciated, and for a good reason. Bestbuy has pretty good prices on them, but pretty much anywhere AzuDai is around $40 and Excel Saga is around $60 (I got both box sets there). In fact, of all my anime purchases, I'd say the Azumanga Daioh was the smartest purchase I've made yet, and it's not like I'm a hardcore fan of the series or anything, either.

When ES delivers laughs, it delivers them in bucketloads. It overstays its welcome, however. It stops being funny and starts being annoying real quick.

It should be mentioned, though, that Azumanga Daioh's quirky style is very hit-or-miss. People either "get" it early on (and thus fall in love with it) or not at all. I'm in the former camp, but it won't work for everyone.
Excel Saga is more densely-packed with jokes and at its best is the funniest show around, but as others have mentioned, it can wear thin after a while. I recommend watching it only in small doses - not more than 3-4 episodes in a sitting. The DVD menus often have lots of jokes and hidden extras, and their "ADV Notes" pop-up features are among the best extras ever put into American DVD releases for anime. |

Azumanga would be better if it was more towards Osaka. the rest of it is a more acquired "cutesy" type of humor. Excel Saga was far better if you're looking for something "funny"

It seems Azumanga Daioh gets the better reception everywhere I look. Yay! I only have to pay forty bucks for my next anime!

I found Azumanga Daioh to be a better slice of life show than a comedy. It has funny moments, but it's not pure comedy. Excel Saga is funny, but you really have to get its sense of humour.

It's interesting you're torn between these two, because to me, they're both important anime. And here's why:
Sometimes, when I'm watching an anime, I'll say, "The characters are nice and all, but there's always so much stuff going on! The Earth in danger, the love lives at stake, the magical balance of the universe, something. Can't these people ever just settle down and live?" And then I pop in my AzuDai DVD. Sometimes, when I'm watching an anime, I'll say, "The heroes are nice and all, but the villians are so much cooler! Yeah, they want to conquer the world, but they're nice guys overall, wheras the heroes are kinda boring. Why can't someone do a show where the evil folks are the focus?" And then I pop in my ExSa DVD. So if you're facing a choice, which question applies to you more? |

That right there was quite the deciding factor for me.
I need a more down-to-earth anime honestly. I haven't seen on yet. I had supposed that Air would be a down-to-earth anime, but it most definitely isn't, so now I have to look elsewhere for it. I'll begin watching my new Boogiepop Phantom DVD's in a few days, then I'll start on Azumanga Daioh. If I feel the impulse, I'll get to Excel Saga eventually. |

Azumanga Daioh then, for definite sure. It's much more subdued and "realistic" than Excel Saga. The humor is more rooted in real-world weirdness than in trying to throw as many high-velocity jokes at you in the span of a 22½-minute episode as it possibly can. It still has some gags that are a bit "out there," but all in all it's infinitely more grounded than Excel Saga. |
