Here's an interesting story about the creation of one Tezuka cartoon character. In Tezuka's manga biography drawn in 1993 ( it's a hard cover volume for school age children, part of a collection on famous influent Japanese citizens)
You might know this character as Doctor Max McNugget, Professor Pompus, Mister Moustachio, the old jungle explorer in Kimba and Leo the Lion and the private detective Shinsaku Ban from Metropolis but in real life his name was Sergent Yoshijiro Saito, an overlord opressor of young Osamu Tezuka when he was made to follow the strict regime of military readiness training all Japanese youth were conscripted through after the opening of World War II in 1941 Osamu was not a model soldier, thank God he didn't take it seriously. During one of Saito's long winded screaming sessions ( the man had a miserable temper as Tezuka recalls, a temper passed on to his comic clone) Tezuka and a friend broke ranks to chase...get this....bugs. Of course Osamu back then was a rabid bug collector. It came to pass that Tezuka and his friend turned to talking about their stressed out task master and in doing so, Osamu drew the man in characture. The Sergent didn't find this funny so he punished Tezuka by making him run around with a backpack of rocks. For which Tezuka got his just revenge by condeming the spirit of this man to his most ill-tempered, loud mouthed and determined to drive his head through a steel wall character. There's no mention of what ever became of the nasty drill sergent. |
