According to http://www.manganews.net/ (see front page) three Japanese men where arrested for having available over seventeen THOUSAND volumes of manga.
If it's not appropriate to share these sort of stories here, I apologize, but I figured ANN readers would be interested. It's notable because this is the first time in Japanese history (according to the article) that such arrests had ever been made. |

Lordie, talk about obsessed. A guy with multiple scanners working serious overtime might, maybe, perhaps get that much done in 4 years. I think jail might actually be good therapy for him.

How difficult can it be? If you have a good scanner, you can easily scan and then save 4 pages a minute.
Assuming that the average volume has 100 pages, that's... Let's see here, 17000 * 100 = 1,700,000. Divide that by 4 = 425,000. Divide that further by 60, as there are 60 minutes to an hour, and you get a little over 7,000 hours of work. Dizzam. Working 5 hours a week it really would take about 4 years. |

Only 5 hours a week? The average is closer to 180 pages for a tankoubon (presuming they were not scanning phonebook-sized magazines). So...
17,000 * 180 = 3,060,000 pages. 4 pages per minute * 60 minutes * 9 hours * 365 days = 788,400 pages per year. 3,060,000 / 788,400 = 3,88 years (rounding down) Take into account holidays and sickdays and 4 years looks like a good estimate for nine hour workdays. Of course those workdays would probably stretch to at least 10 hours when you add lunch, toilet visits and other idle moments. |

Regardless, looks like there just might be an online market for such things.
