Hey! Im Rolo..(I am kinda of a newbie at this forum) but who cares! Anyways I think I have natural talent, but to develope talent I think I should learn from others! So I was planning to get Manga Mania Bishoujo: How To Draw The Alluring Women Of Japanese Comics or Manga Mania Shoujo: How to Draw the Charming and Romantic Characters of Japanese Comics but I don't know which is best? Can some of you help me out?!?!?
[EDIT: Removed the little advertisement for the "webpage." Advertising your own sight is usually frowned upon, unless someone specifically asks for that kind of content. -TK] |

While those reference books are good, I would recommend getting a How to Draw manga book that was made for kids, that is if your seriously beginning. This is the one that I used (and still use ) http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0439317452/203-6200614-6393523
It gives you the bare bones basics about how to draw the face, drawing the face in different types of views, the basics of drawing bodies, limbs, and even covers a bit about colors and shading. After that, I kind of went to my manga collection and started copying my favorite poses and such. Now I'm just copying from other artists online from sites like Deviant Art or from my favorite webcomic artists gallery. I know I'm seriously slow about learning, but this is how I'm doing things. |

Thanks! But I'm not completly sure if I am a beginner, look at my resint work at www.freewebs.com/rolo-art-world/ to see if I am really a beginner cause I'm not so sure I am.
Thanks again! I'll check it out. Anyone else have any recomendations? _-_:Rolo:_-_ |

Neither.
I have a very strong dislike for any of Christopher Hart's anime/manga books. If you really want to look into anime/manga "how to draw" books, I'd reccomend the "How to Draw Anime & Game Characters" series by Tadashi Ozawa. Or find an artist you admire and see if they have a tutorial on-line. Or carefully examine artworks of manga artists you admire. Are you taking any drawing classes? If you want to improve overall, that would be the best bet. |

Yes, maybe I should. I heard many dislike Hart's books, but would anyone mind telling me why.
Ok I'll check that book.. And yeah I'll check the authors of anime styles I admire. Thank you. :r:r:ROLO:r:r: |

- He releases all these self-help books because he's not talented enough to get a steady, decent job in comics. Would you want to take instructions from someone like that? - His entire "manga" style is based on watching whatever anime is on TV on Saturday mornings. - By studying his books, you will not learn "how to draw manga," you will only learn "how to draw like Christopher Hart." and here's my favorite one... - HE ISN'T JAPANESE?!! The white "How to Draw Manga" books from Graphic-sha are slightly better, although the quality of advice is very inconsistent. Ozawa's "How to Draw Anime and Game Characters," as rajamitsu mentioned, is better yet, and has a useful critique portion where they take a student drawing and show where the mistakes are. Sorry buddy, but if you bought the Hart books, you just wasted your money and supported the murder of some trees that didn't deserve to die. The best advice I can give, which most starting "manga artists" never take, is LEARN TO DRAW "NORMAL"/REALISTIC BEFORE YOU DRAW MANGA. I know you're not going to because you want to do the sparkly eyes and shiny hair and sexy girls LIKERIGHTNOWOMG!!!!1 But I'm going to say it anyway because someone else might be reading this thread, and if I can set one person on a good artistic foundation, that will be enough for me. |

Hum, I'm probably a little late, but...
As a student of animation in college, I and my peers have been taught that to become a good artist, one must have an excellent grasp of the basics, of the ground floor. Learn to draw period, be able to draw a regular old human being, a regular old landscape in proper perspective, a common this and a ho-hum that and do them well before even thinking about putting some stylistic spin on them. Learn to draw, then add your own artistic flare. By my experience with these "how to draw manga" books, all you're doing is damning yourself to crappy, mediocre fanart no matter which author you rely on, because you're putting the style to little or no actual drawing foundations whatsoever. From what I've seen, if these books even bother at all to teach you any sort of proper drawing foundations, they wash over them in some thin introductory chapter before giving you 200 pages of how to draw a pair of watery eyes in a mediocre fashion. You're foregoing the basics of drawing, the basics of perspective, proportion, and proper anatomy, and going straight into taking these things you've never learned and putting an artistic flare to them. You're building a house by starting with the roof. You're building an office building by starting with the top floor. There's nothing underneath to support it. Long story short, I'd suggest just avoiding these "how to draw manga" books altogether. Instead, take up evening classes in drawing, or look into reputable books on just plain drawing. Learn to do the basics right, and then use your own skills and a couple anime references and produce your own "manga style" built upon a proper knowledge of drawing. |
