I have notice that last year and this year a there were a few remakes of some anime that came out one i can name is rozen maiden and sailor moon a few i did not know but it listed remake next to it .
I'm not angry about it I'm kinda happy about it . Anyone else notice this or is it just me ?

[EDIT: Fixed your thread title, as I'm sure you meant "sequels" and not "squeals." -TK]

Looking at the Fall line-up: 25% of the animes starting will be sequels and/or second seasons (this is excluding animes that continue to run without break from the Summer season).

There's sequels every year, hell every season, tons of em, mostly because of the way TV anime functions. As for remakes, Sailor Moon was supposed to have aired this season, but was delayed, though we did get Gatchman Crowds instead which feels more like a reboot doing its own thing than any kind of sequel to the old series or the 90s OVA. Yamato 2199 is also still running, and it's a true remake, but that's a 2012 property.

There's nothing to get angry with over sequels even if you had said you were. TV anime that's not on for casual viewers needs to sell discs and other merchandise to have more animation produced in the future, so sequel series tend to make up a good deal of shows airing in a given season. I imagine this partly has to do with the way anime has gone from longer shows, usually 4 or more cours per show, down to just 1 or 2 cours, even leading to a show being planned to be multiple cours, but spread out, likely to lessen strain on production.

There can be trepidiation in remakes, as they can be wastes of time if they somehow mess up whatever the original had done, though 2199 might be a better show overall, and certainly gives me a stronger respect for when they get it right.

Very few "squeals", although I can imagine Tokyo Pig would be next... Razz

Seriously, the exact same whines are being heard over on the US Movies board, and it's pretty much for the same reasons--
We're getting anime remakes, revivals and updates because:
1) Like the Tenchi or Gatchaman series, an old title will fall into new ownership hands, who want to use it right away,
2) A voice actor becomes available to revive their previous hit role

But mostly
3) There's a general feeling that the industry's focus has gotten away from itself, and those now in the industry who grew up with the bigger hits from the 90's and early 00's wonder where they went.
Hollywood filmmakers try to remake Total Recall and 80's horror films trying to remember the cool days when we used to go to theaters, and anime producers bring back DBZ and Sailor Moon remembering the days when those used to lead the marketing.
Sadly, I remember them too, and I'm also wondering. Confused

A remake of Porco Rosso or Tonde Buurin?

Nah. Looks like we'll just have to settle for Silver Spoon. Long Live Porkbowl! Well, likely more like Six Months Live Porkbowl!

On the true meaning of the topic, I don't think we're seeing much more than usual for sequels and remakes this year. It's more of a modern thing rather than a 2013 thing.

Only if they do an anime version of Deliverance by the winter season.

EDIT: I swear that the title of this thread was at one point, "Is this the year of the remakes and squeals?" in which case my post makes a kind of weird sense.

I guess I am noticing a number of sequels of shows I have previously watched.

Now I could check all of the anime season guides from the last few years that I keep in a folder, but that would take a good bit of time to do a good job of it, and I have not even done a good look of next season. F%$&!

I only have two from 2009: Number of shows 20 + 24
amount sequels/ remakes: 3 + 6

2010: 15 +34 + 18 + 33 = 100
remakes/sequels: 6 + 13 + 5 + 6 = 30
30%

2011: 20 + 40 + 16 + 29 = 109
remakes/sequels: 3 + 11 + 4 + 11 = 29
27%

2012: 26 + 43 + 26 + 28 = 123
remakes/sequels: 9 + 15 + 5 + 11 = 40
33%

2013: 36 + 37 + 29 + 46 = 148
remakes/sequels: 10 + 11+ 15 + 14 = 50
34%

Not the best numbers, some of the anime guides are not the most reliable, but it may just be the amount of anime has been increasing. Now I wasted the entire time doing this instead of watching of watching Doctor Who, so I am off for a bit.

And if you watched the current series, you wasted even more time. Razz
(This, in a thread complaining about remakes?)

Fortunately most of the Tom Baker "Key of Time" arc is on Netflix.

It seems like the Fall season might be the season with the most amount of sequels/remakes this year.

I hope they keep it up too. If they need ideas, I can give them a gigantic list of stuff they need to make sequels of personally. Laughing

It's so much more financially sound to do sequels and remakes too. While I respect anyone who tries to go original the odds of catastrophe are much higher. Not everything can be a Madoka.

And as a general rule unpopular stuff won't get sequels anyway so it's not like sequels of stuff nobody watches clog up the sequels people do watch. They only clog up the sequels of stuff individuals want, which likely aren't going to happen whether Popular Sequel gets made or not. I'd LOVE a new Iczer series but I know deep down that whether or not the new Yozakura Quartet got approved has no bearing on why I'm not getting a new Iczer.

Here's hoping that maybe, just maybe, someone will be willing to make a third season for Spice and Wolf. My life would be complete.
