There the same thing written two different ways OVA is Original Video Animation and OAV is Original Animation Video. OVA/OAV are anime series that where never designed to be brodcast on TV, its like a "made for DVD" anime. Hope that helps.

I find the more people use OVA. I think even the japanese use the OVA.
However we know what people are going on about with OAV.

I guess it really comes down to how sensitive you are is using an abviation that spells out a part of a woman reproductive system.

Which is why I use OAV. It would sound wierd to say, "hey did you see that Ova, it was SO awesome!"

But then again, 'AV' in Japan also refers to Adult Videos. Although, I'm not sure if each term is used enough in the open public to get people confused, unless the 'O' could stand for onna (woman), therefore saying "Onna Adult Video" Razz. That kind of OAV might be awesome as well, but in a different way Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop...

But it's one syllable less than spelling it out! Hm...in retrospect, that sounds very lazy on my part, not wanting to say one more syllable. I just use OVA because more people use it.

I normally say Oh-Ve-Ae, no ova.

A more thorough explanation. Aside from what they mention in wikipedia, I always thought OVA was the original appreviation that the Japanese have always used, but Original Video Animation sounds really awakward in english. So Original Animation Video sound more fitting, well to me at least, but I still refer it to as O-V-A since I've been using that appreviation for a long time.

Funny thing. When I say it letter-by-letter, I say Oh-Eh-Vee; when I say the word, I say o-va. Don't know why, just do.

But, honestly, how many people recognize the plural of ovum in the first place? I didn't notice until someone told me about two months ago. I know I am slow, but I never thought I was that slow.

I've never pronounced the anime term as a two-syllable word--it's always been the three letters, regardless of the letters' order. And actually, I was aware of the ova/ovum, somewhere in my mind (it's a Latinate plural like data/datum), but it didn't register. With the state of general vocabulary these days, I'd be surprised if the average male even knew what "ovaries" were, let alone the other terms. Bart Simpson didn't know, for one. Perhaps the current argot is something like "egg factory" Embarassed Rolling Eyes

I actually used to say 'O-V-A' all the time until I joined this site. I don't really know why, but I spent a lot of time shuffling through the Encyclopedia, and I guess I just saw the term 'O-A-V' so much, that it stuck with me.

I never pronunced the term as 'ova,' myself, but I took a lot of biology classes through high school and my first few years of college, so the that particular word is still stuck in my head a little (though I've since switched majors Anime smile).
