For any anime to be counted in the general spectrum of entertainment is wonderful news.

Great news. About 100k (~42k DVDs + ~55k BDs) combined DVD/BD copies sold for Evangelion 2.22
That's pretty awesome. Glad to see it doing well, as it's a fantastic movie. |

Just goes to show how much sales like the one that happened right around 2.22's release can boost sale numbers.
Still, very glad to see it be so high up there. Bummer it probably doesn't mean much for the industry, but still good to see it up there. |

Hahaha, about 2% of what Tangled sold, which are about 1.7 million Blu-rays and and 3.46 million DVDs in a week. Just goes to show the difference in consumer power between America and Japan. Maybe America is catching on the moe bug too?
I wonder how well Nausicaa Bluray+DVD combo discs though.... Last edited by enurtsol on Mon Apr 18, 2011 1:09 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Good news indeed!
97K units (BR & DVD) in a single week is pretty major for an animation that doesn't come from Warner Bros, Walt Disney / Pixar (since they're together again), or Dreamworks. I wonder what the metrics are compared to all anime sold in the US would be? |

ANN is providing 2 separate sources. Nielsen VideoScan: Blu-Ray Relative Sales (does not include Wal-Mart sales) Tangled - 100.00 (Neilsen didn't provide, but IF using The Numbers about 1.7 million) Eva 2.22 - 2.08 (then 2.08% of 1.7 million = 35,360) And since 57% of the Eva 2.22 units sold in home video were on Blu-ray, then 57% = 35,360 Blu-rays and 43% = 26,675 DVDs. 62,035 units total. Meanwhile, The Numbers: US DVD sales (includes estimated Wal-Mart Sales) Tangled - 3,463,789 Eva 2.22 - 41,912 (about 1.2%) So really, what we could figure is 35,360 Blu-rays (without Wal-Mart) + 41,912 DVDs (with Wal-Mart) = 77,272 total Eva 2.22 sales so far. I hope that clears things up a bit. Dunno why ANN just didn't put it that way in the first place. Last edited by enurtsol on Mon Apr 18, 2011 1:56 pm; edited 6 times in total |

I find it hilarious how the DVD was $10 and the BD was $22, and the BD still sold more. |

So how many of these sales do you think are to people who hadn't bought 1.x?

I was surprised they were that high for the DVD version but you remind me that they really lowered the price of the DVD.
The Blu-ray version is a lot better though not quite as dramatically better as 1.11 was vs 1.01. BD is the way to go if you can for the Evangelion movies. I image the sales numbers, which include all the pre-orders (like me), will fall dramatically next week.

True, but there are a few other factors. In addition to WalMart, VideoScan also doesn't report ANY online sales, which includes Amazon, Right Stuf, RACS, and everybody else. Anime sells quite a bit more through those channels than normal discs. So the 45,000 unit estimate is probably quite a bit closer. The old rule of thumb used to be, add 33% to whatever VideoScan says. So by that logic, that might even be a little low. Good news, at any rate, but not unexpected, since Eva 1.0 was Funi's top seller last year, beating even the never-ending but mainstream-friendly DBZ reissues. |

Ah. I didn't notice there were two different sources.
I have to say the math is still pretty close. One wouldn't expect the ratio of BD to DVD purchases to differ all that much between retail and online sales. And since "The Numbers" said that Eva 2.22 sold approximately 42,000 copies on DVD, and Nielsen says that there was a 57/43 split between BD and DVD copies... one gets once more 42k DVDs and 55k BDs. ~42,000 / .43 = ~97000 total copies sold. ~97000 * .57 = ~55000 BD copies sold At least, I see no real reason why the BD:DVD trend would be all that different between the two sources. |
