The OVA of Sky Girls came out last year and I was hooked. And now the TV series is finally out and I think it's totally cool. Yea I know the girls are drawn cute, but the overall story is fasinating to me. Three girls who have nothing in common brought together to fly a experimental exosuit style aircraft called a "Sonic Diver".
Eika, 17, a fighter pilot and natrual leader trying to come to terms with her devotion to her mission as well as her pride. Otoha, 16, a skilled apprentice swordsperson who lost her father (and twin brother at some point) years earlier in the military, trying to follow her dream. And finally Karen, 16, a genius with a IQ of 170 (and very shy around boys) trying to find her future. There's a new character called Elsa, who was added to the series that hasn't been introduced yet, but from what I can tell is not a major character. We'll see over time as the series comes along. The first episode just came out last week in Japan as of this posting (7-5-2007) and I thought it was great. I can't wait for the rest of the series to come out over the year. If you get the chance, check it out. Last edited by Sticks on Fri Sep 07, 2007 4:41 am; edited 3 times in total |

seen the first episode of it. Kinda like it but the girls may be a bit too loli for its own good. i rather like the girls design to be more mature then to be loli.

Yeah, I saw the OVA myself and it just creeped me out with the loli vibe. Made me feel like a pedophile for watching it. I think I'll stay away from the series personally.

I won't deny that the "Loli" style is all over this series, and it can give some people a standoff-ish prospective as to how it's preceive by "questionable others", but some people can have those same suggestive views no matter what style of anime they choose to watch (except for hentai, it's obvious why some would watch it).
Let's face it, if it weren't for the cute girls in the first place, most people wouldn't even pay attention to any kind of show or movie, animated or live action. The real questionable thing about this series is how the girls look, considering their ages between 16 and 17. Since this is how THIS series is drawn, much like so many others out there, should it really be thought of as a bad thing?? I mean, if you look at all the school girls like Kagome (Inuyasha) to Haruhi (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) with their short skirts, long legs, and easy to see bust-size, then why is this show any different?? Lets face it, these kind of shows have been around for awhile and they will be around long after this show is over. All we can do, like any TV series, is take it for what it is and except it or not. Who knows, it may turn out pretty good over time, which is what we need to give it: time. Personal note: - I like the show, and I plan to wait and see how it turns out. The idea of a alien nano-species trying to destroy all humanity is pretty cool. As long as there's plenty of action and storyline involved.... well.. who knows. Aww yes they are releasing a TV series of it?! I saw the 1st episode OAV "primer" and was just mesmerized by the art style and animation quality. I really loved it, yes the main characters are a bit childish and young looking, but that's the image that anime series have these days. Female protagonists seem to be getting younger and younger (or younger looking) but I think it is a nice, pleasing affect for well animated, great looking TV series that implement CG animation and have great, action-packed stories.
This is the kind of show that will get me into watching mecha anime again. Now if they'll only make a Strike Witches TV or OAV series. |

Well thanks, but I should have put emphasis on the word series, as in more than one episode. I want more, the concept is so amazing and I think Gonzo animation studio should invest more time and money into it. |

Same can be said for lot Gonzo projects, and I mean a lot. They have a tendency to end rather badly or just end without really tieing up loose ends leaving you hanging. They stop when they should go and roll with it when they should stop. |

Well, the 2nd episode was translated just the other day, and I'm just as drawn towards the show as ever. The girls finally see their Sonic Divers up close and it looks like some of the storyline introduced in the OVA, involving Otoha and her connection with her Diver, which she calls "Zero".
Also, a mystery begins to unfold as it's reviled that some members of the military are investigation something concerning one or all of the girls and the Divers. This show plays well like others I've seen where there's more going on that hasn't been reviled and won't be for a while. It plays like a girls-only style show at first, but then you see that some real serious stuff is happening all around, and the girls will have to work things out with themselves as well as the dangers and happenings around them. Episode 3 will come out later this week, which I saw the preview, so I have to see it now. |

Hmm, Strike Witches to me has better character designs, drawing style, and looks more interesting...but I'm sad that Gonzo did the OAV for it. I hate Gonzo, most of their anime is really low quality animation, drawing quality, and bad directing, in my opinion. I haven't seen the Strike Witches OAV though, maybe with only 1 episode Gonzo could afford to do decent quality work for a change. Conversely, J.C. Staff in general has among the highest quality animation and drawing quality for its shows in general IMO, I'll probably give Sky Girls a look when it comes out. Unfortunately I noticed that the director is the same guy who did the Love Hina series and numerous other anime series which had really bad directing, so Sky Girls is gonna have bad directing probably.

As of this posting, episode 3 has come out and episode 4 will come out later this week. The series is starting to take shape, with character revalations and "to be expected" story progression. The blending of hand drawn animation and CGI in the show is great, especially the Sonic Divers, whice are fun to see fly. Although we all know that the story is about them fighting the Worm, we have yet to see it happen. And from what I've seen of previews of episode 4, it looks like it won't happen for a few episodes more, ..... not that it's a bad thing, the show needs time to grow. The girls are starting to know each other better and their connection to their Sonic Divers are really begining to take off, literally.
The ending of episode 3 was pretty much predictable, but still exciting. Like I said before, Otoha is my Favorite in the show (which is kind of who the show is focusing on more), which makes it more so for me after she saves the day. Now comes episode 4........ we'll see. Im a fan....... |

I think this show is funny in the way it can portray characters that are 16-17 as loli. Consider that there are countless other shows that show the same exact age or younger girls, but they look 20 with very large bust sizes (see Shuffle!). The content itself is generally good, it's a slightly different take on a pretty generalized formula and story. However, after only three episodes I can't judge too much as to what it was like. The OVA was very good imo, I'm hoping the show comes along the same way.

Well, it's been a few weeks since I last posted, and Sky Girls have already gone through 3 more episodes for a total of 6 episodes (even though in Japan episode 7 already came out the it won't get here till next week), and people are wondering if I have gotten tired of the show by now.......... well probably not all people.
But have I gotten tired of it yet??????????????. NOPE!! Not yet!... hehehehe. It's getting interesting now and I can't wait for the other episodes to come out over time.. all 26 of them. All I can say is this, it's definitely not for kids (young adults maybe) and the drama is starting to build. The characters are coming to life and we get to know them as people we care about. Their funny, serious, shy and never boring, all the things that make up a great show. We still have 20 episodes to go and plenty of time for the real action to begin. Also the Sonic Divers are awesome to see, kinda wish they really existed. I'll admit, this kind of show may not be for everyone, but from other blogs I've visited on other sites, there are plenty of fans everywhere, and with still plenty of episodes to go, we'll all be very happy...... which makes me wonder of it's still to early for Konami to talk about producing a second season?????? (I hope.... ) So for everyone out there still wondering about the show, at least watch it for a while THEN make a judgement call about what you think, it is the intelligent thing to do. |

I've also enjoyed it quite a bit, having watched through episode five already. The story is unfolding at a good pace, and it looks like we'll be getting more action soon.
It seems a bit reminiscent of Idolm@ster Xenoglossia and Stratos 4, not that this is necessarily a good or bad thing. Sky Girls has a pleasant feel to it so far, but we haven't really gotten to why they are training, at least where I am in the series. I am looking forward to finding out where it takes us. |
