I've been wondering this for a while now. How popular is cos-play in your area? I don't dress up in cos-play and I don't think I ever will.

Personally, I've seen pictures of people in cos-play but I have never ever seen any real live person in cos-play before (pokemon halloween costumes do not count!). Do you think it's because I live in such a small small city which is only a half a dot on the map? Heck, sometimes maps don't even acknowledge the existance of my city. But then again, a lot of my american relatives haven't even heard of Canada... ha ha ha!!!

Okay, back on topic. Do you dress up in cos-play? Where do you go when you are dressed up? Do you know anyone else who dresses up in cos-play? Is it pretty popular in your area?

Being that I lived in a lot of states in the U.S., it seems that it deals with certain areas. Like, when I lived in Maryland about 20-30 mins away from Baltimore there were a lot more cos-play specially during halloween(I've seen once or twice outside of halloween where someone will have dressed up as an anime character...) ...I assume this had to do something with the anime convention that happens in August every year. Now living in New Jersey...I hardly see one person dress up in cos-play even on Halloween. I won't go into the other states I lived in because it'd be too long and not worth reading but these two states and areas I lived in are just prime examples.

I myself do not dress up in cos-play because I believe I don't have to prove myself of being a fan by wearing outfits...It's fine if other people do it(I have nothing agaisnt them) but I feel dressing up in cos-play is just a way of showing off and trying to prove you're an anime fan. But people have there own enjoyments so I respect it.

And yes I know plenty of people who dress-up in cos-play...you move around a lot you get to meet some very interesting people.

It's rather fun when you get into it. I've done it once at the last con I went to and I plan to do it again next year!

I got alot of enjoyment making the costume itself. Learning how to use the sewing machine and modifying patterns... half the fun goes into making and planning what you're going to wear. The other half is the warm fuzzy feeling you get when your costume actually matches the character you're playing when you put it on. Plus it's alwas a bonus when everyone around at the con is complementing and admiring your hard work.

It's stressful when you've left things at the last minute, but it adds to the overall experience of cosplaying Anime smile

I've only seen cosplay at conventions. I don't cosplay but my sister does. I like observing cosplay much more than participating in it myself. In Japan though people cosplay on the streets of Akihabara everyday.

Around here cosplay isn't that popular(except during Halloween if you'd count that), but there's really no reason to cosplay around here unless for some reason you just walk the streets dressed as a anime character.
Now that I think about it that's not such a bad idea I think I'll cosplay around town as Armstrong, go to Wal-Mart and be like "This method of picking up a can of soup has been passed down the Armstrong line for generations!", then take my shirt off for no reason at all.
>_>

So you go to clubs in cosplay? Does everyone else in the club cosplay as well?

I'm not sure about people wearing cosplay as regular clothes (which my mom asked if i was going to (in a derogertory manner) wear the naruto headband i wanted to buy... i just wanted to collect/have/be in pocession of it!)

However in my area there is the fanime con and japantown festivals which have a lot of cosplaying going around. Many of my friends are quite willing to cosplay too.

No-one, and I mean no-one except my friends and I cosplay in my area. Heck, most of them don't even know what anime is. Welcome to Scotland.

probably. I live in the bay area and there are a lot of anime fans, probably because we have a lot of asian immigrants that cause a lot appeal for anime, which is then spread on to other people..

1. I supposedly live in the 8th largest city in the US and I've never seen or heard of anyone cos-playing here. I'm not really an authority or anything, so maybe there's some sort of underground cosplay group that I'm not aware of.

2. No, I've never dressed-up in cosplay and I don't really fancy the idea at the moment.

3. I have yet to visit any anime convention here in the states, so the only people I've ever seen cos-playing were on some street in Tokyo. I don't honestly know where I was, but it wasn't Akihabara. It looked like there was some convention going on and there were dozens if not hundreds of young Japanese in costume milling about.

Now that you started this post I think you need to try out a little cos-play and let the rest of us know how it went. If you're happy with the result then upload a picture or something so we can pass judgment on you. Very Happy

Here in Chile, Cosplaying has became popular since 1998 or so, before that time, it was very rare to see people cosplaying. Anyway, i have never seen anyone cosplaying in common life, just in events.
Maybe "popular" is toooo much but at least you can see cosplayers almos in every event and competitions between 120 - 200 cosplayers.
It still happening only in the main cities anyway, cause those are the only ones were events or conventions occur (Santiago (capital), Concepción, Viña del Mar and a few in other smaller cities).
Cosplaying is always growing here and you see at least 20 Narutes/ convention Anime hyper.

Bye bye and sorry for the english, i'm chilean.

Nobody cosplays where I live, but that is to be expected from the middle of the breadbasket. I plan on breaking this when me and my friend dress up as Isamu and Demi-Fiend (with the shirt, of course, aint gonna go with those tight shorts either *shivers*).

I live in San Antonio... Go SPURS!

Anyway, I've been to the Bay Area a few times and it's a great area but the houses cost too much. Oh, and I'm a little curious what a "potential cos-player" is? Is it a cos-player who simply doesn't know it yet? Do you go around getting people in-touch with their inner cos-player?

Okay, I've always wondered what it's like to try and find anime outside of Japan and the US. Can you tell me what the anime market is like in Chile, if you don't mind?
