Okay I know how hypocritical this is going to sound since I was one of teh many Otaku who was converted by Toonami, although it was much more because of Tenchi Muyo and Outlaw Star then DBZ, but I have to ask this question: Do we really want people who are only familiar with DBZ and other anime that is shown on T.V calling themselves Otaku, while never actually spending money on DVDs and manga. Even after Toonami came out anime was for, in general, a group of outsiders that may or may not be socially inept aside from as small group of friends. I can't help but feel that when a teenager who still finds the word poopy funny starts considering himself an anime fan that anime on T.V, particularly DBZ, has gone too far.

That sounded really elitist.

"Otaku" basically means "fanatic", or simply "fan". Anybody can be a fan of a show or a music group or whatever. Just because you don't spend ridiculous amounts on import merchandise and for DVDs and manga doesn't mean you're not an anime otaku. Some people are just way into anime more than others. There are varying levels of fandom. Maybe they just simply can't afford to buy stuff. In any case, you are no less an anime otaku than the next guy. Effort isn't necessary. You just simply have to like something a lot to be a fan.

I agree. The topic sounded really dumb after I posted it, but I couldn't take it down.

I don't mind if someone watchs Toonami and Adult Swim just for the anime, (Heck, I watch CN just for Tom and Jerry, AMCE Hour, YY H, and AS Razz) it just when they run around on the net, calling themselfs "Otaku" when you have this gut feeling that they haven't seen anything outside of that. *L* Yes, I do chat on Yahoo and run in to these little bugger once and a while, but it's all fun and games until they get feeling hurt. Razz

ADD ON (Dang FF 2 has filled 75% of my current mind state): .hack//sign and X-Men I also watch. Other times TBS (Drew Carey), Tech TV, and (Don't laugh) The Game Show Network.

Forgive me if I offend anyone here, since it's not my intent.

Living in NYC, you often run into, what many refer to as, homies. That in itself is not a problem, I have many friend who would be classified as such. However, more than a few of them at least act less than intelligent. So, it's a knock to otaku when you see them standing around in Suncoast yelling about what level Goku was at when he fought Freeza the third time. There was a time that Suncoast was the only place to get anime near us, and there was always a pack of kids like that crowding the whole section, just for the DBZ tapes. In my experience they never once looked at any of the other titles. And of course, there was a sign above the tapes that mentioned that otaku shop at Suncoast or something along those lines, and the DBZ kids picked it up. I remember one group laughing as they left, calling each other O-tuck-ooh.

So, that's my experience with "DBZ Otaku" who just pick up the term for no reason other than the fact that they saw it next to DBZ.

k, nee-san, there aren't suncoasts here. it was saturday matinee, no?

but yeah, i feel that you have to be a certain level of obsessed to be considered an otaku. mebbe watching more than t.v. anime has something to do with it. but peeps who watch dbz aren't otaku. they're dbz fans. Cool

Then they're DBZ otaku, not necessarily anime otaku. You can be a fan of a show, not necessarily a genre of animation that it came from.

The Problem is Otaku is a term we us western anime fans throw around way to often. Its Original meaning its pretty much one has no life outside of his obbession for his hobby. an example the die hard Trekkies. I consider someone a Otaku when they debate endlessly what mech was in show xxx or when they can rattle of the mesurements of there favorite character from the top of there etc etc etc.

edited for better phrasing.

But, that's what I used to do with DBZ. I used to spend hours watching it, surfing for it and discussing with my friends. I was a DBZ otaku, no doubt, but I expanded my horizons to include pretty well any anime so I consider myself an otaku. However, I have not seen a lot of anime, 15 or so series. I don't go out the the nearby video store and rent it though so technically, I dont' go out of my way to see it. Most of what I see comes of tv. I have never gone to an anime convention. Do you think I call myself otaku mistakenly?

I guess what i'm asking is how much dedication is required to be considered otaku, because if you wanna come on over I'll talk anime with you for hours. I'll argue about how Ryoko's better than Ayeka or why lots of characters in love have a volatile relationship and less have a stable one or whatever else comes up.

Don't worry. You're an otaku. Anybody that can talk endlessly about Tenchi Muyo girls is an otaku in my book. I still maintain that to be an otaku or a fan, you simply have to like something a whole lot.

Oh, I'm not worried, I was just using myself as an example cause I'm not, nor do I want to be, a "Trekkie" level Otaku but I'm more than a casual fan. I also believe you only have to like something a lot to be an otaku or a fan.

Mihoshi Kuramitsu: 88cm bustline....

But anyhoo, that's fairly accurate to say. Not everyone who starts off with CN is going to spend the rest of their lives hunting down VHS fansubs of Violinist Hamelyn and begging for a TV series of Wangan Midnight. But, honestly, we don't need that many people of such a nature in the fanbase, right? Otaku, for stateside fans, is almost an honorific. In Japan it's almost a derogatory term. How about we all meet in the middle and not worry about the level of devotion.

Hey SWEET! Over Rev OAV's! *wanders off*

hm. given that violinist of hameln is available on DVD from amazon.co.jp, is that cheating if we buy that instead? :)
