Is this worth buying?
The box sets are only $50 dollars each and it looks funny.

I haven't seen the anime, but yes, Maison Ikkoku is an excellent series if you're into romantic comedy. It's considered a classic, and is one of, if not Rumiko Takahashi's best series. It has great characters, who can be both realistic and off-the-wall, with lots of development and tangled misunderstandings between them. The said misunderstandings can range from dramatic to hilarious. It might be too old for some, but I don't think that it's aged much at all.

The DVDs look pretty sharp, I must say. From a visual standpoint, I don't think it looks like it's as old as it is, aside from the obvious 80's anime style.

Either way, it's a superb series and the best romantic comedy I've seen, unless you consider Fruits Basket to be a romantic comedy...

I can't recommend the series if you're someone who has to see results now. It's a very laid back series, and it takes its time getting places. It's a series you'll be commiting to the for the long run though. I can't imagine not finishing it now that I've started.

The manga may be a less financial investment though, and since they're both top notch works, I'd actually say choose your format, if you're not like me and get both.
