Has anyone else read the new Mario one-shot from Masashi Kishimoto? What are your thoughts on it? Personally, I really enjoyed it. The protagonist is a very compelling character. It was very different from Naruto and I hope we see an actual series based on this in the future.

My initial thought about it 'This is significantly more enjoyable then Naruto'
A title which I've been struggling with comprehending, let alone enjoying, since I started reading WSJ in January.
The storytelling here, in Mario, is pretty tight. Falls into a bunch of cliche pitfalls, both in mob culture and romantic relationships. But I think it has a particular style about it that helped rise it above the average. I definitely dug it's seinen sensibilities, over typical Shonen antics. But then I dig pretty much anything that doesn't involve a high school.
I'm a little unclear if this is suppose to become a new series in the future. Of if this one-off is the entire story. I'd love to read more of THIS once Naruto ends.

Have you? What are your thoughts on it? Generally if you're opening a discussion topic it is on you to get the ball rolling with your own remarks on the topic you've opened.

Didn't spoiler[Mario die] at the end? Otherwise, I'd love if this was a new series. I agree that, despite cliches, the storytelling felt tight and it absolutely kept my interest. I don't feel like Kishimoto is great with female characters, but this heroine was quite interesting and I thought that the emotional impact of the ending was well done. The use of the teeter-totter was also really nice - using it as bookending worked well, and using spoiler[a childlike setting for acts of violence] is nearly always effective.
