What would you like to do with anime?
For example: I, personally, would like to watch all of FLCL in one sitting with absolutely no drugs or other mind-altering substance to help me through. I would also like to see the rest of Lain (I've seen the first disc, and it was crazy wierd, but just good enough to make me want more) |

I'd like to learn Japanese well enough to understand these flicks in their original language without the use of subtitles.

I think learning Japanese would be first, although it's surprising how many words I've learned so far by watching anime these past 4 years. And second would probably be to have a complete series of all the anime that I've rented and also the new titles that are going to be licensed.

Good news, Joe. I believe the Cartoon Network will be running it late night on Thursdays starting this fall in case you didn't know, though I have no idea how bad the edits will be. I've been amazed how much anime I've gotten under my belt simply by watching Adult Swim and renting some movies at Blockbuster. Aside from keeping up with Adult Swim broadcasts (I can't wait for season 2 of Fullmetal Alchemist!) I guess my goals now are to rent The Places Promised in our Early Days when my rental store gets it and Howl's Moving Castle when it's released. I'd also like to see Fantastic Children and Honey and Clover from what I've read about them, but it looks like that's going to be a bit of a wait (I don't think Honey and Clover is even licensed over here yet) as well as a decision to put down the money and make DVD space, since I don't think they seem like the types that would be broadcast over here. |

i know im new but heres advice: lerning japanese, is a MAJOR BITCH TO DO! lotsa memorization and all that. not very fun unless you are ghoing to japan and living there (like i currently am). so just to warn you, unless you are serious, do not do it simply bc you want to so you can understand anime better. thats what www.wikipedia.org and the back of the book refrences and index are for. |

Believe it or not, learning a new language can be fun, even if it can be hard and may not be all that useful. There are far worse ways to spend your time, although languages other than Japanese may be more useful to the average American, like Spanish, French or (if you must) Chinese. |
