Sounds a little too much like Ringu, but I'll check out the inevitable preview in Jump.

It's pretty diffrent actually, more of a psycological thriller, and it's main character is somewhat of a sociopath. It starts off quite good, though a little show, showing a suprising amount of maturity for a SJ title. Interesting conflict and characters and almost devoid of any clices. Then things start going downhill rapidly at a very specific point in the story. I'm hoping the author can pick himself up, and I'd probobly still finish it even if it remained the same quality, but definitally overhyped, probobly due to the fact that this is the most mature and thought-provoking thing alot of people have ever read.

Overhyped? I disagree. It's an excellent series...Viz has done well, licensing Monster and Death Note. Now if they could only get a few more mature manga and start another magazine...

Death Note went downhill around the time when spoiler[Raito/Light lost his memory], but then it fixed itself with spoiler[Raito/Light regaining his memory, trapping Rem, and causing the deaths of L and his helper, IMO the most satisfying chapter in the entire series. ] The new arc is shaping up pretty well...I doubt if Death Note will be able to continue very long without becoming terrible, though...There are only so many L duplicates they can come up with...and if a guy named O ever shows up, I'll be angry.

Considering people are acting like it's the first and most intellectual thing ever to happen to manga, I'd say it is overhyped. It's good, and if it does get out of the slump it could be one of the best things to come out of Jump in a while, but it isn't one of the greatest things of all time like people are saying.

Death Note has become too full of itself, is what I think. I mean, I just don't care anymore what happens to anyone in that manga.

I suppose you are correct, then; my apologies.

I'm also really interested in the manga. After reading the scans, I became hooked. But a concern of mine is the direction it will be going. It was looking good, until an unexpected turn of events made the story longer than I thought it would have become. I'd hate for the manga to go on and on and eventually become tasteless. One of the things I really enjoyed about the plot was the pacing. The plot was really good, as well as the art. Characters aren't spared, and Kira kills the people who get in his way. But if it goes on to be twenty volumes, I doubt I'll show interest in buying it. I'm used to waiting, so I don't have an issue to waiting for the series to finish.

You're talking about a Shonen Jump title here. They are expecting to go as long as they can and the mangaka reap all the benefit of having a successful series.

This series shouldnt go over 18 volumes tops. 3 arcs would be about pushing the limit.
