There's two sides of this coin. On one side, if they started from the beginning, it would have taken two years to get back to where we originally left off. On the other, newcomers are going to be completely lost. I hope this series' fanbase is devoted enough to keep it going.

Started from the beginning would've taken like 4 years. That is unless they aired 2 episodes a week, then it would be 2 years. but idk .

It's not like it's hard tossing people into a WSJ series in the middle and seeing if they can swim, but that works better when the series runs daily. I didn't start watching DBZ until somewhere towards the beginning of the Saiyan arc, but it also helped I could see 5 episodes a week and not feel totally bewildered for 7 days inbetween. Also, that meant I was only around episode 22 or so. Getting someone initiated some 200 episodes in is a bit tougher. Even catching that up takes a long time.

Hopefully they put in adds for the 26 episode box sets, or the FUNimation/Hulu streams.

I guess starting from where the DVD sets leave off is as good a place as any. I don't think the Skypiea arc would have been a good place for people to start and if you went far enough back to the Alabasta arc you might as well just start at the beginning.
Plus Water 7 is a great arc imo and eventually it does feature some flashback episodes, although those won't air for over a year...

This is probably the best method out of all the options they had.
Taking 4 years to get to HD would be a hassle. I like Davy Back (more in the manga than the anime), but it's a nice fun start off point.
Can't wait to see how Funi handles the promos/recaps.

Someone is pessimistic. Care to explain why this one decision will ultimately destroy Toonami? Last time, it was airing Eva 0.1, before, it was airing "Soul Eater," and before that, it was airing "Naruto." Why this lack of optimism for something anime fans have been fighting for four years for?

I don't like that they're starting 200 episodes in. I haven't watched OP since they last aired it on tv. Sure I remember some stuff so I won't be TOO lost, but... I did want to see the older episodes again.
I guess we'll see though. I might still enjoy it.

No idea if this factored into their decision, but the arc they're starting with is the one after the last one they aired before Toonami went off the air. I don't think they finished that one, though.

First off for everybody complaining and being pessimistic about toomnami, here's some food for thought: don't watch it. Don't make an ass of yourself for no reason. So you don't like shonen series, thats cool, its hardly a surprise, but look on the plus side: all of the supposed 'big 3' (seriously who started this name?) are announced now, so if there are any other show announcements in the future, chances are a tad higher it may be for something you like. so there.
As for the show airing itself, it kinda stinks its at 1:00am but hey, whatcha gonna do? I suppose that, other than the toonami pessimists, OP fans will be ticked that we're starting at davy back, but I don't really mind, especially considering the arc that comes after that. It will be neccesary to see the crew in a calm/goofy mode before things take a turn for the serious and they nearly fall apart from both internal and external struggles I just hope that with this the fandom in the US will be getting a bit more of a kick, recently its been sticking its head into the NY times chart for manga sales so this just may be the best time...

I got into One Piece by chance when I caught a random episode from Thriller Bark Arc on TV so who's to say it won't get new fans?

Skipping Arlong/Baroque Works Saga?
Sure the CP9 arc may possible be the best one of the series, but new fans won't know what the hell is going on, and old fans, well idk why they would want to watch reruns at a ridiculously slow pace.
