With all due respect to Urban Vision, I daresay there are some anime out there that really *should* just fade away. I saw this in 1995, thanks in no small part to the owner of the local videostore, who dumped *everything* animated into the 'cartoons' section...I think my brain is *still* not fully recovered from that.

I saw it in 1995 too (when I was 20), after my local Blockbuster picked up a modest supply of anime (mostly Streamline).
I seem to remember that it seemed almost like a feature-length version of a comic book given the same sort of treatment that children's book artwork gets on Reading Rainbow, with the occasional animated element added to mostly static shots. I will, however, defend the computer-animated sequence with the helicopters and skyscrapers, which, while almost the CGI equivalent of caveman art compared to films like Madagascar and The Incredibles today, and while very poorly intergrated with the film itself, still was pretty advanced by 1983 standards, and actually looked slightly better than the CGI seen in Hollywood films from the same approximate era like TRON and The Last Starfighter. Golgo 13 was the first anime I ever bought. I still see it from time to time and still think it is one of the most action packed movies I have ever seen, animated or otherwise. The computer animated helicopters sequence has not aged well, but that is a small flaw in a great movie for all of us who like the Golgo 13 character. Now I wonder when we will ever see Golgo 13 manga in the U.S.. Viz? Anyone?

Like Fantomas "The Professional Golgo13" is the first anime I ever bought. So a DVD release will bring back some really good memories. Especcialy when I heared that they have a Interview with the film's producer. I think is long over due for the Streamline haters who actually love this movie. About the movie, the cel animation is surreal but the 3D is... from 1983. I remember a comic store had Viz's the Proffesional manga every issue expect the first. Now Viz re-realese the series. PLEASE!!! |

Golgo 13 was the first anime I saw. I owned the nintendo game back when I was 11 or so, and played it all the time. At the movie store my parents gladly rented it for me. Luckily they weren't around when I watched it! It blew my mind at that age.

Ah, yes 'Golgo 13: The Professional'. I take it this is the first movie flick. I take it this is the one where Golgo just lies there in the bed while his nightime lady does <blank blank> to herself?
I remember this flick. This was the first 'Golgo' flick I've ever saw. Funny thing is that I had thought that this title was out on DVD before like the rest. But after closer inspection it wasn't. Well, that's good because there are still people out there that want to see it or haven't seen it. Just because there are those don't want to see "dated" anime doesn't mean that new fans can't enjoy it as well. Some of the classics do have some redeeming value no matter how old, good or bad. |

I thought the visuals in Madagascar were great. They weren't going for a photorealistic look this time, other than with the Mahnattan backdrops, they were aiming for cartoonish and fluid, and, in that regards, I think they were successful.

He, he, guess Golgo 13 was the first one of many on the road to anime addiction.
I have always been fascinated by this character who seems more like a force of nature than a human being. And he is bad, but his targets are much worse and they do deserve the treatment of G13's modified M-16. I remember reading once that Viz was thinking of reissuing the G13 manga with new covers by the guy who does the covers for Marvel's The Punisher, but that was a long time ago. It makes me mad that there is such a variety of manga in the market, yet one of the most succesful ones for over 20 years can't be found here. Any news about G13's manga would be greatly apreciated. Maybe we have to ask Mrs. Answerman for this one! |

The manga is great, but this movie was pretty awful. Every time you turn around someone's got their pants off. Enough with the softcore, it's supposed to be an action series.
And that rape scene is downright disturbing. |

I am also quite excited about this since I am a HUGE fan of mr. Duke Togo. I posted a while ago about something I found on the official Shogokukan Golgo 13 site that appeared to be some VHS tapes of a type of series or ova or something called 'Golgo 13: Perfect Machine of Snipe'. I just hope that somehow somewhere we get more of Duke. More manga and more anime.
