This thread is SOLELY dedicated to questions like: "I'm a newbie, what should I watch?" Or "I'm looking for (x) kinds of shows." OR "(insert show here).. what do you think about it?" OR "What should I buy?"
Please insert ALL comments here. I'll start this off: s.CRY.ed vs. Inifite Ryvius? What do you think? |

That's a pretty good idea Sake, actuallt that should be a section all on it's own.

Hang on... Another Anime forum has a thread just like this. It has recommendations divided by genre.
Suggestions for additions and revisions are welcome. (Sticky this thread.) Last edited by Aya Reiko on Thu Mar 06, 2003 9:17 pm; edited 8 times in total |

I think Outlaw Star should go with Cowboy Bebop. Tho I've never seen Hellsing, I do not like how it looks. It just looks like dark...crap. But, i've never seen it, so, i can't be sure. it just doesn't seem to fit with Bebop.

If you're looking for similar titles (and have a little bit of time), check out this recommendation database:

How could that one be missed. Hmmm... I'll replace Read or Die with Outlaw Star, mainly because there is more buzz around OS than RaD. And partly because RaD isn't available (legally) in the U.S. until May. P.S. I rather not use AnimeNet. User Ratings, in general, aren't that good (or accurate). |

What about Miyazaki films? I have only seen a few, but i really enjoyed the ones that I've watched. Newbies should be introduced to them, no?

Let's try this thread out, shall we?
Hey, does anyone know where I can find translated anime lyrics? I really like anime music and I really wish that i could understand what they were saying. It's frustrating when they aren't translated with the series. Can anyone please help me? It would be nice to find a database of translated anime music. Thanks! Actually, I had a question for myself. When I was watching the Chance Pop Session DVDs, I noticed that for all of the songs within the episodes, ADV only provided the Romaji transliterations. Anybody have any clue what possessed them to not translate them, even in the English dubbed version? I don't get it. |

I really enjoyed Hellsing... Although it falls a little short at the end, it was an experience to say the least... But yeah, I am not so sure it fits with Bebop, they actually don't really fit at all... but they are both considered stylish, but in different ways. |

I am a big, big Hellsing fan. It does something that very few other anime shows do, which is convincingly set the story in an existing country other than Japan. The fact that the character designs and everything else about the show do not necessarily scream "ANIME" from the tops of thier lungs - yes, they are anime characters but the drawing style is, I'd say more "mature" - to me speaks volumes of originality and creativity. The storyline, while yeah, it does get a little weak towards the end, is really interesting. The characters are fun to watch. I dig it. I don't think it's anything like Cowboy Bebop, aside from the fact that it's for adults, and so is Bebop. They are both stylized series. Other than that, they have nothing in common. I'd sooner suggest Outlaw Star.

Well I must admit I have never actually seen Hellsing but... from seeing the previews it doesn't really look like one I would enjoy, but if so many people like it maybe... I shouldn't judge a book by its cover and try it out.
I would personally suggest Fushigi Yuugi, I love the comedy in it and the cute SD scenes, not to mention the great story line. I'm elated to have seen a preview for a sequel of some sort comming out for it. ^.^ I hope it measures up to my expectations. (Which are quite high for the artist Watase Yuu.) Also, a new favorite of mine is X/1999, I love the animation and art that makes it so beautiful. CLAMP has definately done it again, to my personal delight. ^.^ Those are my suggestions for the moment, *looks around and notices everyone has fallen asleep listening to her ramble on like the little school girl she is* Okay I'm done now. ^.~ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WAIT!! BTW SakeChan, does BD at the end of your name stand for THE Black Dragons by any chance? (Sorry to intrude on such details but I was just wondering.) |

Sadly, it doesn't stand for anything cool. The B and D are just my initials, though I suppose I could make them stand for something ridiculously cool like ... Burning Deathstar X or something. |

Someone, please tell me the appeal of Read or Die. I've watched the thing in its entirety and was rolling my eyes the entire time. The plot's not deep at all and it's very predictable. In addition, the animation is crap and the main character is so dumb it makes me want to smack her. I can see it as a somewhat entertaining release, but the "next big thing?" Please enlighten me.

I don't know about it being "the next big thing", but it's definitely on my Must Buy list. Why? I'm not sure exactly. It just feels right. Maybe I've fallen victim to its propaganda. Sometimes you just have to grab the reins and hold on for dear life. |

Well, I can't say that Read or Die is the greatest thing out there, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that the animation is "crap." In fact, I think that the animation is definitely above average, especially in the first two episodes; the movements are fluid, and the use of digital effects like motion blur, add a sense of realism. I have to admit that the animation in the third episode was a bit weaker (it seems like they ran over budget or something) and the ending was rather lame (after being delayed so much, I expected a better story even though it wasn't really going anywhere). As for the appeal, I found it fun to see Yomiko using paper in such extraordinary manners. She was a bit dumb and obsessive, but she was capable at what she did. The plot was pretty weak, but I never expected much from it. Call me simple-minded, but Read or Die delivers in terms of action, which is sometimes good enough in my book. If I want something deeper, I'll go read a novel. |
