When there's a double-length special episode in the middle of a TV series, should that episode be counted as one or as two episodes? For example, should we have
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (1 hour), 9, 10, 11, 12
or
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8-9, 10, 11, 12, 13
?
This is an issue that applies to the current episode list, but it will have a big impact on the new episode list design that I'm currently thinking about, so I want to have everyone's opinion on the matter.

I don't think lumping them would be a good idea because not only are you really dealling with two episodes, but you're also dealing with two different episode titles and in cases like Naruto those titles can be quite lengthy. You'd be looking at a mess trying to squeeze all of that info together so it'd be better to split the episodes up and note that they were part of a joint showing.

Well, if there are two titles then obviously that's two episodes, not one. What I'm talking about is if there's just one title with double the regular length.

Well, let's take an example from Yakitate! Japan - they recently ran a double-length episode, billing it as two episodes. There was only one title, but there was lengthy filler material between the two parts, and a clear indication that these were two separate episodes being shown as one long feature.
I suggest that the proper way to do this is to enter both episodes as separate episodes, with the same title and the same air date, and with a comment that they were aired concurrently. That preserves the integrity of the database, too.

Yeah, it may as well be consistant. Seems like episode number rather than title should be the deciding factor. Seperating episodes because they have different titles and combining episodes because they have the same titles seems inconsistant if they're both given different episode counts and are both shown as a one hour special.

It reminds me of the old mix-up about Azumanga Daioh. Should you count each five-minute segment as a separate episode, even though it has a separate title? Or should you consider the title of an aired episode to be the aggregate of all the five-minute segments?
Or should you just put on a kilt and dance a merry dance, sporran swinging back and forth?

Well yeah, that's a proven and oft-used stress reliever, but in the long run it doesn't really fix anything now does it?
