I'm looking to get a few anime series, specifically K-ON!! season 2 and Stein's gate, to name a few, but I prefer thin packs/ complete collections to save a little money and some shelf space.

I know the best way is to keep track of what's posted on ANN's encyclopedia, but I'm wondering if there's any type of trends of which anime gets thin pack/ complete releases.

As of now, none of the series I've mentioned have thin packs, though I'm not sure if there's a way to tell if one is slated to be released anytime soon. Anime is so hard to predict that I'd hate to miss grabbing a series because I waited too long. Obviously if the separate releases were my only option, I'd do that instead of unknowingly waiting for a thin pack that may never come.

If you wait long enough you'll eventually see one. Assuming of course that

  • The given series is more than 11-13 episodes facilitating the need for it to be split up into segments.
  • The company still exists at said later date

...then the standard practice is that company's make the initial stage 1 release in "parts", then wait a year or 3 and release some type of complete collection that combines these parts for a stage 2 release. A few anime companies like Funimation also have some type of stage 3 economically priced label as well where older series or series that did not sell well get a price cut and sell for cheap.

Both of the series you mentioned were 2012 releases, you've got a long wait before you see any type of compiled release for either I think. I wouldn't expect anything until sometime in 2014 at the earliest.

Not to many companies still do the think pack releases but they usually wil do a complete collection and or a re-release complete collection at a lower price down the road to sale more units.

Your looking at a brick release shelf space wise of one DVD or Blu-Ray sized box that is the thickness of two or so stuck together.

Based on my research Funimation at the very earliest would have a complete Steins Gate collection after at least 1 year which would be after December 2013. Right not it's about 80 dollars or so for parts 1 and 2, expect to pay about 40-45 dollars for the complete set.

Unlike Fumimtion that will re-release to death a show if you can wait at a lower price Sentai is up in the air. They have in the past done so.

For K-ON season 2 you can get both parts for 70 dollars or so. Expect a complete collection for about 40 and up if they release one but you might have to wait a few months minimum since it came out last august.

If I was you I would try used on Ebay if money is tight or wait for Right Stufs big black friday till nearlly christmas sale.
