I found Dorohedoro's first volume fairly average (although the art was superb, very reminiscent of Tsutomu Nihei, not surprising since Q. Hayashida was once Nihei's assistant, which to be honest more than made up for the lacklustre intro) but it was the subsequent volumes that really got to me. It's bizarre, shamelessly funny, and very, very original. Though the plot has become interesting lately, it's the twisted humor and eccentric casts (and once again, the impressive art) that truly shines here. Give it another chance!
Also, read Fairy Cube a month ago, what was I thinking? Remind me never to read anything by Kaori Yuki ever again. Sheesh |

Her other stuff is pretty good. I used to be a fan of her's back when I was a teen looking for dark, gothic manga. What teen doesn't love elegant murders, epic stories about the battle between heaven and hell and some insane characters in f*cked-up relationships? Hey, at least things happen in her stories! That's not something you can say about what's popular with the dark-romance-loving crowd now

Ooo DOROHEDORO is out in book form? I read a bit of that on the IKKI website, and thought it was bonkers fun. Think I'll go grab that tomorrow.

Kind of harsh review of Dorohedoro. I'd understand this kind of review better after having read the first 2-3 books. But if you know the series is already 15+ volumes in Japan, it leaves some space to set something up.
It's definitely worth sticking to, everything shifts into "batshit crazy" mode around v5-6. |

I read Fairy Cube and yeah, it was kinda confusing and too short, but I wouldn't say it's that bad. I remember reading Godchild in Shojo Beat which I found to be hit and miss. As for Angel Sanctuary, I find it interesting but hard to get into. So for me, Fairy Cube is kinda just average but definitely not the worst I've ever read.

I agree. I'm a huge Kaori Yuki fan but I couldn't really bring myself to get past the first volume of Fairy Cube. I'd rather Viz bring over Bloodhound (Hello, vampire hosts, now's the time if any Viz) and Ludwig which are some very awesome morbid retellings of Fairy Tales that just make me drool over the art. As to J-Drama's... The Wallflower/ Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge live action is just about wrapping up. Not as good as the manga, but I've been getting some laughs out of it. |

Fortunately for xxxHOLiC, Tsubasa has now ended and it is flying solo. Hopefully it will also clear up a few of the many, many loose ends and unfinished storylines that Tsubasa left hanging at the end of its run, but for now it's its own series.

When has Kaori Yuki made anything good? I mean Angel Sanctuary takes the battle between heaven and hell and made it about a bunch of pretty boys standing around doing some occasional action. Someone throw a mountain already.
That and the fact that Kaori Yuki thinks that only fundamentalist christians would be against incest is hilarious. She's completely nuts. |

Thank you! I've been wondering what all the fuss over Twilight is, it's not that good, and like you said Carlos, nothing happens. They talk for a hundred pages and then, like you said "You're hot!" "So are you!" "I love you, but we're sooo different." "Let's be ill-fated lovers and be together forever!" Cue Rick Astley's "Together Forever".
Together forever, and never to part Together forever with you...blah blah blah. Indeed, Stephanie Meyer has terrible writing. How could this have ever been considered good?
I never got into Kaori Yuki's manga either, but I give her credit for doing something different. Her manga is a good alternative for people who are tired of reading the reverse-harem shojo manga where the dumb girl has to be constantly protected. I like dark and gothic stuff, but I have seen much better (and darker) from other authors than Kaori Yuki. She is nuts if she thinks only fundamentalist Christians would be against incest, many religions and ethnic groups are. Heck, she should read Zac's review of Kiss x Sis, (they're not even related by blood, but he still thought it was gross.) |

I tried but I'm just not into any of her works even when I was a teen. I read her God Child and Angel Sanctuary years ago and though I couldn't put it down during those times, it was always with a feeling of disgust with her clunky narratives and failure in terms of panelling and backgrounds. I still think there are other better shoujo out there, none that has to rely on sensationalized and mawkish subject matters. |

Do you mean those that started right now or in general some dramas to watch during this spring?  The Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (the Wallflower) drama version should still be airing I think, else I can recommend a few that have already finished but are definitely worth watching (Nodame, My Boss My Hero, Queen's Classroom, With the Light) ^^

Um, she doesn't. The lead couple in Angel Sanctuary come from a Catholic family, mostly so that they can have characters familiar with all the angel names she's about to throw around. If you look at how Setsuna's classmates' reactions, she hardly thinks the condemnation of incest is exclusive to Christianity. Mostly the series uses incest as a way of contrasting legalistic morality that makes snap-judgments based on rigid rules with a more flexible ethic of love that considers the human perspective. And then you have to contrast it with The Cain Saga and its sequel, wherein incest isn't romanticized at all. I'm seriously getting creepy shudders thinking about that series and some of its twisted relationships. I'm not defending Yuki Kaori's works as necessarily grand masterpieces; I like them but they aren't perfect, nor could I ever get into Fairy Cube. My biggest gripe with her is that she lets her casts get inflated to a point where it can be hard to keep track of everyone. Angel Sanctuary in particular got ridiculously convoluted by its finale. Her uber-shoujo style, with all the flowing hair and pretty faces, also lacks the ability to create a cast of snowflakes, ala Fullmetal Alchemist or 20th Century Boys; some characters can be hard to tell apart as a result. |
