Not that it would be in any way difficult to top that 1998 cinematic afterbirth, but does anyone else still think this is still a terrible idea?

Don't blame Toho in this economy. Just hope they got a good pay-day for it, and that Godzilla isn't a chick in this version.

I kept expecting the next Godzilla film to be released in 2014.
Though I'm glad atleast one movie company is interested in making a new Godzilla film. I'm curious to see how well this proposed movie will turn out. Or in other words what Godzilla will look like in this film. Anyways this news sounds more promising than the previous news about that questionable 3-D Godzilla movie that was either canned or went under pre-production. |

I simply don't trust an American studio to respect the source material to do it right. They'll be thinking of how to sell it to American audiences, and in doing so will change everything we love about the franchise. 1998 American Godzilla is just a textbook example of this type of thinking. But I do hope to be surprised. It certainly can not be worse then the 1998 version. |

I admittedly don't remember a hell of a lot about the 1998 Godzilla film, but did go to see it in the theatre with my dad, and I don't recall at all being disappointed. Of course, I was thirteen years old at the time.

30 stories talll, breathing fire... spreading alarm! Godzilla! Godzilla! Godzilla! and Godzoookieeeeeeeeeeeeee. Oh god, that cartoon was the greatest thing ever...even if it was a terrible mutant of a show

Before everyone gets their undies in a bunch about this news, you take a look at Legendary Pictures filmography (over at IMDB) and you can see they have done plenty of action / fantasy / sci-fi features. (whether you like the listed movies is another matter...)
I'm cautiously hopeful with such news. My limited recall was that Toho was taking a break from releasing Godzilla movies for awhile after Final Wars was released. So for us Godzilla fans, the possibility of a new movie, especially with the advances in CG since 1998, could be very good news indeed. |

Stay true to Godzilla's origin story. You know what I'm talking about. It was not a French Polynesian atomic bomb or anything else. Godzilla was created in Japan by atomic bombs from America. Anything else would rob the series of its meaning. |

See, I'm the complete opposite of all you obsessed about the "true orgins" and like the 1998 movie better than the one's from the 70's (or whenever they were made). I could care less if it's "true", just make it entertaining and have Godzilla destroy a lot stuff.
I don't think I'll ever understand how nerds (no offense) think. |

I'm actually surprised Legendary Pictures was able to retain the rights after Roland Emmerich basically screwed TOHO once they secured the rights. It's no secret TriStar Pictures was sued over the blatant redesign of Godzilla. I think this is a good thing, as it's been a while since we've seen a Godzilla movie that wasn't re-released by TOHO. I didn't see the 1998 remake because I didn't appreciate the design change. Once I did see it (just a few years ago, actually), it wasn't that bad of a movie (all of Emmerich's movies tend to close badly, IMO), though I still didn't like the new design. I own quite a few Godzilla movies so I'm excited to see what comes out in 2012. You can bet if this studio takes a similar approach as Emmerich did, I won't be going to the movies. If they do good, it'll be the first time I go to the theaters in quite some time. Godzilla rules. And you know, I'm rather stunned there haven't been any anime made over it (that I'm aware of). Interesting. Yo, Kyoto Animation, get to work on it!

While they're at it, make sure to grab Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, that way they can release the MST3K versions.

yes yes YES! I'm so thrilled, even a bad godzilla movie is better than none, I just miss watching them. There haven't been any from japan or anywhere else in years, so I'm just happy to be able to see a new one again. Legendary Pictures has done alot of good stuff lately so I'm rather optimistic about this.

I hope they make it like Godzilla 1985.
Okay, okay, a lot was changed but that movie was awesome, even if the Japanese version was better, and at the very least in the spirit of the original. I know it is blasphemous to praise such a thing on an anime forum, but I thought the movie was fun. 
And if you haven't watched it you should check it out. At the very least it was better than the newest version. |
