I was really hoping this would happen. I figured the interface for the stream wouldn't enable it to run on iPods. Not being able to get early access with my membership is a little disappointing, but I'll live. *downloading*
Also, the App is free but requires the 3.0 software update to download. Time to update my iPod... |

The app was actually originally launched back in late December, on December 21st. It was however almost immediately pulled from the store by CR because of an unspecified bug (though those of us who saw and grabbed it in that short window were still able to use it, and the streams were in place to watch). It reappeared last week when they released the 1.01 update.
I've not seen anything explicitly outlining that they won't be having the near-simulcast releases available through the app (in fact, I've failed at finding ANY mention of the app on the CrunchyRoll site...), but at the same time the episodes available for the newer shows do seem to only be the ones that are available for everyone to watch. This (and the limitation of being on a WiFi connection, at least for stock iPhones  - though I have been told by CR's support that they're looking into what needs to be done to enable viewing over cellular networks) is probably my only real issue with the app- honestly I'd far prefer dealing with watching through an advert before the episode but getting to watch the early releases with my paid membership than having to wait but not having any ads.

Interesting. I'd been saying that this is what Cruncyroll needs.. but I don't think I ever thought to check the app store instead of just the site.
I would indeed be a lot more useful if it ran off of 3G... I guess I'll be bugging Ashyukun about what homebrew app he's using. |

It is kind of surprising to me that they haven't been hyping it up left and right- they had a new newsletter on Monday but it made no mention of it at all. In my emails with them inquiring as to why the app had been pulled (I highlighted it on The Appcast when it came out, only to have it not be available shortly thereafter...  ) they said that they were ready to announce it when it was released, but had to scratch that when they pulled it from the store initially. I'm personally still keeping my fingers crossed that they're planning on having the simulcast content available, but that their staff that needed to be setting up the encodes were busy with working on the app and haven't caught up yet. I'll be optimistic that this is the case until they officially say otherwise.  This might also be why they've not made any official announcements: they want to have everything caught-up and available when they start hyping the app.
As for running it on 3G, there's no real secret to that- I'm running a Jailbroken phone with 3G Unrestrictor, which lets you 'trick' any app into thinking it's on a WiFi network even if you're just on 3G. Though they take more time to initially load up (unsurprisingly) than over WiFi the videos still play perfectly fine over 3G, something that doesn't surprise me at all given I've been streaming video over 3G using utilities like AirVideo for some time from my computer at home. |

I'd love a similar application for Windows Mobile because I'm getting pretty tired of properly sliding the screen around in skyfire so I can watch through the browser. Of course, Windows Mobile is in the opinion of the unwashed masses, no good compared to anything with a bitten apple on it, so maybe after WM7.
edit: at least I can watch Crunchyroll on Skyfire without being forced to use Wi-Fi. Can do it over EV-DO. |

I can only wonder how people can read the subtitles. I tried watching anime on a friend's iPhone and my eyes had to strain to the max just to read what was going on. It'd be fine with dubbed anime though.

Was that a fansub or this app? Fansubbers are notorious for using super tiny fonts under the assumption that anyone watching it is sitting 1ft from a PC screen and can easily read it. CR fonts tend to be larger than what fansubs usually offer. |

The app is using the the iPhone OS's internal subtitling capabilities- you have to select the sub stream when the episode starts playing. By and large it's quite readable- it's as others have said about the same as watching it on their streams on a regular computer, and definitely better than some fansubs.
For most shows at least... I did some testing with some older shows just to put the app through its paces, and the Komugi-chan episode is just completely unreadable, both for a horrible font size & color and for its bad encoding. However, in the app's defense- it's just as bad watching it on the normal site since the subs are hard coded and the encode there sucks hard too. All the newer stuff I've watched has looked fine though. Here's a screen shot:

This would be really good if you could connect it up to the 3G network like you can on the Anime Network app. I almost never use my iPhone on the wifi connection due to the fact I have the 3G network.

Nice to see that the app was actually the real thing. Having downloaded it and watched a few shows, it's very impressive. The interface is simple and clean and the video quality and loading time is very good (the subtitles being so close to the bottom was a little bothersome at first, but it became a non-issue afterwards). There a few bugs to be worked out (search can sometimes make the app crash, Wi-Fi connection drops out every so often), but it is perhaps the best anime video app in the App Store right now. It's also pretty good on battery consumption--much better than the devouring Joost.
I watch a lot of my anime on my iPod touch, so having a CR app is quite convenient. Now if only FUNimation would make one too... 
(Note to ANN: Besides the ones mentioned in the article and the Joost app, which basically carries just FUNimation videos now after Viz Media pulled out, there is also GONG's app, which has a few of Enoki Films USA's titles, among a handful of others.) |
