Astro Plan is a sci-fi TV animated series from China, schedule for release in January.

Looks familiar? I got to admit the mech designs are pretty cool.

China, a decade or more behind the curve, as usual.

Yep, looks pretty much like every other anime in which flying craft turn into robots.

But who cares. The Encyclopedia is filled to the brim with shows that look familiar to others.

At least the news is about a similar cartoon and not one in which they took, frame by frame, and altered it and called it original.

Maybe it's retaliation when people try to make dishes similar to Chinese cuisine.

Wow, that was not even subtle. It had Valkyries changing into Gerwalk and Battroid mode, an obvious SDF-1 liftoff scene, and the fighter coming up on the elevator shot from the open. Toss in a few Gundam beam sabers and what may be new-type powers, and you have a series!

At least their fighter designs aren't as bad a rip-off of Macross as Korea's Space Gundam V. In that, they didn't even bother to design a new robot, they just used a VF-1J Valkyrie as is!

looks like every other mecha show to me. it's hard to call plagiarism, when every show in the genre is a ripoff in some way or other.

True.

This isn't a ripoff.

It's just another mech anime.

Heck, look around you, and you'll see alot of "ripoffs".

But at least this makes the transition from japanese anime to chinese anime slightly less painfull and hard.

Also, the mech designs look great. But not as good as Wing Gundam or Epyon, they would pwn them easily.

Ship designs are much better, at least the Chinese knows how to do scale properly most of the times.

I say it is easy to call plagiarism when the mecha design is completely the same thing. Mecha anime only tend to copy the most basic stuff "Boy finds robot, he has a trouble past, etc etc.", but it's kind of different when your mechanical designs are pretty downright exact.

Nice find with that comparison shot. It doesn't look as bad as the horrifc 70's korean anime movies you find in dollar store dvd sections, and the CGI is pretty darned slick- I like the rounder character designs too, which remind me of assorted European "anime" styled shows.
