Last EXILE...the smaller aircraft are called vanships.

Anyway, personally I'd suggest Stratos4. Basically about an air force division specialising in wiping out large asteroids before they hit Earth. Bit on the comedic side with a touch of fanservice, but still quite good (surprisingly good I'd say, I'm surprised I'm enjoying it as much as I am).

Miyazaki's Porco Rosso, which should be out in February if Disney holds to their promise. Actually ... Castle in the Sky has plenty of flying too.

801 T.T.S. Airbats. Basiclly focuses on a group of misfit Fighter pilots.

Patlabor 2 has two scences with Aircraft. spoiler[One where the JASDF Airplanes intercept an unknown target, and the Helicoptors that systematiclly destroy all communications in Tokyo. Plus a Fighter Jet is one plot point of the movie.]

That would be Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise. It is not about flight perse, there is a nice long flying scene that is arguably one of the best anywhere in all anime; but the movie is actually about spaceflight. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this movie for anyone.[/spoiler]

I would advise against it. Jfrog, a friend of ours, and I all found it dreadfully boring.

Then again, we're the only three people who realize how much Last Exile sucks.

If you're into aviation, you really can't go wrong with Porco Rosso. It was Miyazaki's love letter to the old era of small planes, so he just filled it with flying competitions, people building planes, planes taking off from canals, and even maybe a dogfight or two (it's been a year since I saw it, so my memory's a little rusty).

Also add Miyazaki's "Nausicaa Of The Valley Of Wind" I'd love to fly a Mehve. Wink

The whole movie was about planes and more planes. There was the dog fight spoiler[to the death, and till the bullets ran out and they started throwing things at each other]. I liked the scene where spoiler[Porky was engine testing the new engine in the shed and the roof panels were almost blown off the shed]. It was kinda funny. Ah, that was before the scene where he took off from the canal after he retrofitted his float plane.

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind too had lots of planes. Powered gliders (mehve), small ones (the Valley's sole gunship), medium ones and big military transport planes and that humongous aircraft that spoiler[crashed in the valley.]

Sentou Yousi Yukikaze (forgive me if I mispelt that. translation: Battle Fairy, Yukikaze) is a really interesting (IMO) anime. Only the 2 out of 5 eps on DVD right now (it was released very slowly, like Macross Zero), but it's worth checking out.

As to Macross, Macross Zero and Macross Plus are VERY aviation heavy, so you might enjoy those as well.

But I agree with whoever mentioned it first when they mentioned Last Exile. That's what I'd recommend first and foremost for aviation at the moment. Yeah it doesn't hold to the laws of physics very much, but it's more about FLIGHT not how one flies, so the very much made up and fictional side of it can be forgiven.

I liked Last Exile, but would caution others that they have to be prepared for the series not to hit it's stride (in my opinion) until midway. I feel this is partly because the world surrounding the characters is itself a major player and much time is spent simply on shots of the aircraft. Another issue is that Delphine is not confronted until late in the series (which IMHO is necessary as there would have been nothing else to do if she had been dealt with earlier) and when she finally is she engages in alot of psychological terror. Personally her insinuations made my skin crawl, but I can see how others might be bored and want her to get on with something.

In the end, I smiled and mourned with the characters and wanted Delphine to be taken out in the worst way after what she'd done by the end of episode 23, so I thought the story did it's job quite well.

Confused I can't agree, Last Exile sounds great, looks great, and well, is great (in my opinion). leetpowa, check it out and see for yourself, you shouldn't be disapointed. I wonder how much of the show these people saw before they desided to call it boring? For it is not.

I can't see why people would try and call Last Exile BORING. I found that it was far FAR from that. Maybe someone who's in for action action action would be dreadfully bored, but someone who's in it to get into an excellent story will NOT be disappointed. I think saying Last Exile is great isn't simply an opinion. The series has ALOT going for it and nothing that really speaks against it, unless you're an action fanatic and can't stand it when more focus is put into good story telling and not simply combat shots.
