And no, kids who live outside Japan, this isn't your Golden Ticket to go make animé with a Japanese Willy Wonka.

What's this? KyoAni running out of material? Now's the time to finally continue FMP until the end

I'd guess that this is probably because KyoAni figured that they can't create anything original by themselves (Munto needed some work...). They may be the king of adaptations, but if you can't make good original properties, you might as well be Gonzo...

Actually i'm kind of seeing a foresight about what will happen to KyoAni after Haruhi/K-ON. I think they'll be travelling the same road as Gonzo if they keep on doing adaptations and also, the epic fail known as endless eight.

The moment Kyoto Animation had abandoned storytelling for sensual appealing, that's when they went stagnated on being creative with their anime. What's worst, it worked for a while when Kyoto Animation managed to attract a certain Japanese anime audiences. But now neither themselves nor their fans know just what to expect from each others, when they're so used to the current standard of storytelling in anime.

Simply wow. Two very opinionated replies against a studio known for creating stellar (debatable, I'm sure) titles.
Did either of you (and others) think this is an approach to give back to the fans?
Because that's how I look at it, and it's about time. Connecting with fans is what every business in the anime industry should be doing. By giving back to the fans, it builds a relationship to those who enjoy the works of Kyoto Animation.
I think I'm going to cry. This is just wonderful news.

Hey, why think about other possibilities when there is a chance to trash a studio you don't like.
All I know is that a) unknown artists will have a chance to shine and b) we might get a good story out of this. Both of these are good things.

Quite. The selected winner will have been approved by writing staff, and one should assume it'll be realised with the sort of production values I've come to associate with the studio. As this contest is genre non-specific though, I can't assume I myself will enjoy the end product as much as I would one of their existing adaptations.

I agree with what Zin5ki. The winning entry could become a simulcast (I hope) and possibly become an anime that will help get the industry back on it's feet. I know I am jumping to conclusions but it could happen. Independent/amateur animators have had success. Just look at Voices of a Distant Star.

I'm 'bout to put the "ih" in "ihg'nint", but what exactly constitutes a "scenario"?

In anime production this is what could be called the main script.

This just seems like a continuation of the logical trend for this company. Kyoto Animation is so creatively bankrupt and so dependent on the die hard core fanbase (ex. Mario1234567) support that they outright need to find exactly what that demographic wants them to make (even if that means right down to having them write the show for themselves) in order to sell it back to them for profit. If they fall out of touch with their core fanbase for even a second they are literally doomed as far as those 10,000+ DVD sales go.
This is pretty much Kyoto Animations way of saying that they are willing to accept the mantle of glorified fanfiction company once and for all in order to stay in the game.

Actually the moment they realized that they could make a moeblob show and it would sell better and faster than anything else regardless of any actual effort they might put into it they started to tank in every department other than animation. Although even their animation has taken a hit in that it just hasn't improved in recent years as per the normal trend or has outright become more sloppy.
Anyway I would still call Kyoto Animation the King of Moe Anime, but King of Anime? Lol.....maybe if I had a very limited perspective. Granted this comment came from Mario123.....snooze.....so it's to be taken with grain of salt and a dash of fanboy support.

... I like how I wrote two sentences, yet only the first gets quoted. Here, let me repost the second for you to read again.
Quote: | They may be the king of adaptations, but if you can't make good original properties, you might as well be Gonzo... |
I give KyoAni credit when it's due. Yes, Air/Kanon/Clannad/After Story/FMP:TSR were excellent adaptations, but they still were adaptations. The only thing I've seen that's original from KyoAni is Munto, and that was passable. Not my thing, but it had good potential.
Now, @PetrifiedJello, why in the world would this be a "good" way to give back to the fans? Shouldn't that be in producing more of what the fans deem their excellent work (aka More FMP, goddamn it! Milk that shit, not moe 4komas!) instead of holding a competition to find stuff to work on?
While it may be a dream come true for some fan/pro to get her/his story animated by Kyoto Animation (and it is nice of them to hold such an open competition), this still points out the obvious question to me: If you're such a powerhouse studio, why do you have time/space to do this? And, even if you're making time/space for the winning project/s, what does that mean? Shouldn't people be beating each other senseless for you to adapt their stuff? Or, as I pointed out, do you not have a solid original bone in your body and need something to inspire you?
I rest my case.
