After my recent order placement at TRSI, I discovered I was missing disk 5 of Kanon. I rushed back to modify my order only to discover it's not available.

I'm still getting the series, but now I have to buy the missing disk. Luckily, it's still widely available.

I would love to be happy to help reduce inventory, but I've been cautious of incomplete sets. Either for lack of availability, or the retail price of purchase (which kind of defeats the sale price).

I was curious to know if others buy an incomplete series set in hopes to fill it in later or pass on it for the complete set.

If you do buy an incomplete set, how difficult has it been for you to fill the gap?

I do this often. Usually if TRSI has a majority of a series singles really cheap I will buy then, usually find the other volume or volumes that I need else where. I think I last did this was with Negima! I was able to get Volume 1 thru 5 off TRSI but I had to get Vol 6 off of Amazon market place. Luckily enough I was able to to get a new copy for close to the same price I paid each one off of TRSI.

I also did this with Welcome to the NHK as well. I bought Volumes 1 and 4 at Suncoast buecasue they were 7.50 each. I then ended up getting Volumes 2 and 3 Shawnek at Amazon Market place, then Volume 6 through TRSI.

I also have done similar things with Sakura Wars as well.

It hasn't been too difficult for me to fill in the gaps for missing parts of a set.

I have never bought an incomplete set and I doubt I ever would. Perhaps the only exception might be if, for example, I could get volumes 1 thru 4 and was just missing volume 5. I can't imagine buying singles like: 1, missing, 3, 4, etc.

Primary reason: I don't like singles in the first place but can be persuaded to go that way if they are cheap enough. Having to potentially pay full price for a missing single volume would (usually) totally defeat the purpose of saving money.

I do this only if I can find the missing disc(s) relatively easily like from amazon marketplace. I just did this for Eureka 7. TRSI had everything, but disc 2. Disc 2 was at amazon for an okay price (not great, but not ridiculous either, and still cheaper than brand new MRSP). Other series I've done this for are Noir and RahXephon.

Months back I drove abut 35 miles both ways to get Kanon volume 5 because it was not available anywhere online (well, not at a reasonable price anyway). At the moment I think you can get a copy from the Amazon marketplace but you'd have to shell out at least $50 for the single volume. You should cancel your order at TRSI and wait on a Funi sale, you'll be able to get the new box set with all the episodes for less than $50.

I never intentionally buy an incomplete set if I don't know whether I'll be able to get the whole set or not. I was buying Kanon as it was released and was just waiting for an ADV sale to order 5 and pre-order 6 when ADV lost this title and others. By the time I woke up and started looking I wasn't able to find that volume 5 anywhere online. Luckily I did find it and Funi printed plenty of volume 6 to go around.

The only series that I have incomplete is The Wallflower, for the same ADV failure; volumes 4-6 were never made by ADV or Funi. Funi only made half season sets for the show, which I'll have to grudgingly purchase to at least have all the episodes. I'm pretty sure it won't fit in the artbox.

~$23 at BestBuy. Grabbed it during lunch.
Smile

My admiration towards Amazon is fading. While I know marketplace prices are subject to the seller, collections sold through Amazon have increased in price.

A shame, really, as it used to be the first place I went to find sales.

Now, TRSI gets that honor. Especially on Thursdays.

Long time no read indeed, but I'm glad to hear things are working out well for you! Don't forget to come back and say hello once in a while, dead or alive or undead as the case may be. Wink

I bought Angelic Layer volumes 1 and 2 in a Geneon sale or ADV sale back in 2007 I believe. I was able to find volume 6 at Game Stop, but I have not been able to find any of the other discs for the series at all. I also bought Kiddy Grade volumes 1-3 back in 2006 at Game Stop, and over the years I've been able to find volumes 4, 5, and 8 through Game Stop and Ebay. It's been a while but I think that when I'm able to find any of the missing discs at somewhere, it will have been worth quite the wait. But something I won't want to do again. These days I've only looked at DVD series that have everything altogether. Nothing missing. That's where thinpaks make for a very convenient purchase.

Usually, I check Amazon before buying an incomplete series, to see if the remaining volume is available/reasonably priced. I also typically check to see if there's a boxset, and how it fares pricewise to the singles (I prefer a box of some sort, so if a couple more bucks gets me one, I'll do it.)

The only series I can remember buying with no clear way of getting the other volumes was Eat-Man on VHS, tapes 2-5 (On account of they were 2 bucks each, factory sealed, from RACS's amazon front- sounded good to me!). Heavy searching eventually turned up vol 1 on Amazon (listed as 'Haunted Junction starring Eat-man' Laughing)- that was 8, so as much as the others by itself. Volume 6 ended up costing me $30. And I think it was all worth it. Wink

It won't, I tried. On the plus side, you only need the second boxset if you have all 3 singles, and the artbox does comfortably hold 5 manga volumes (if you happen to be collecting that.)

You can find all the Angelic Layer and Kiddy Grade singles in the Amazon marketplace pretty easily, and they all have listings under $5- except, for some reason, Angelic Layer volume 3, which is $20+. (Figures- the one I got a defective copy of is the expensive one. Sad )

I usually refrain, especially if a boxset is available. It just takes too much effort to try and compile missing holes. Plus, for some reason, there usually seems to be one (or for longer series two or three) singles that are just ridiculously pricey. About a month back I was interested in gathering the Lupin the III tv series singles. All of them were available for decent prices except, what? two? and those two's prices were just astronomical... I think when all was said and done it would have been cheaper to gather all of the Cardcapotor Sakura singles (and that's saying something).

But of course we're not really talking about rare series here. But even with a newer series, the problem with collecting individual singles off of amazon or ebay or half is that there is still a shipping fee of ~$3 to contend with. That $6 single all of a sudden is closer to $10 and no longer feels like such a great deal. I've done the math on several series (forget which ones off hand) and realized that even buying TRSI singles and filling in a hole or two via amazon skyrocketed my price past TRSI weekly special price and not that far from regular retail price. (Say $45 for the singles, $35 for TRSI weekly special, $50 MFRP.) Which I have done when the artbox is quite a bit better than the boxset... but not usually worth the effort.

For me it really depends on what it is and how bad I want it-I collected Tenchi Muyo GXP ad hoc-I have 2 of the twin disc sets and the rest in singles.

Like others have said it depends on the show. If its readily available series and I can buy the majority of the discs for cheap i'll snag the singles and pick up missing pieces.

Usually i prefer getting a boxset, i really only buy singles for my B list shows. Stuff I like but aren't in a major hurry to get.
