Some anime elevate themselves in my esteem just because they have a particular element I am predisposed to like that they do well. I've heard those sorts of elements that just click with a person referred to as "Awesome Buttons". So I want to know, what are your anime Awesome Buttons? Does a show with superpowers automatically get in your good graces, or one with blood and gore? Maybe historical settings are your thing, or characters that can fly, or possibly split-personalities.

My personal top 2 Awesome Buttons are:

Time Travel: Any show with time travel in it automatically piques my interest and gets a slight advantage over other shows. I love seeing which version of time flow the show subscribes to: the single-timeline where history can be altered, the single-timeline where things can't be altered (time is a 'lake' but we experience it as a 'stream'), or the multiple-worlds version (which is my favorite because things can get so delightfully complex.) Twisted Evil
Even when not executed as well as it could be, there is something about stories with time travel that just give me an epic feeling.

Fairy-Tales/Legends within the story: I love when a show utilizes this element. It gives me a feeling that there is a story within the story to be told, which makes the show feel more real to me. Princess Tutu used this element with the story of the Prince and the Raven and the "there once was a man who died" story. Both of these tales intertwine with the story of Duck to produce masterful storytelling.

If either of these elements are present in a story, something about them really engages me and can tip my enjoyment from 'good' to 'awesome'. Another Awesome Button of mine, but to a lesser degree, is when characters have intricate and/or well thought-out costumes, as they do in Le Chevalier d'Eon.

So, Tris8.... Okami-san probably went from "decent" to "good"? Wink

Actually, I rated it "good" myself, but it could have integrated its fairy-tales better.

Are you currently watching Folktales From Japan? They're all straightforward folftales but one of the reasons I love it is that I'm hoping it will better inform me for those instances in anime when they reference their folktales in their stories. I mean, for all the times I've seen Tanabata episodes, until last week, I have never gotten a complete explanation of the tale. YOu know the stars are lovers that are separated and only meet during the festival, but now I know the details... it didn't quite explain why you wish on bamboo cuttings to celebrate it though.

An attention grabber for me (but if done badly would draw my ire) are shows with double meanings/ perspectives- something that bends reality in an interesting way. But not symbolism per se, not works vaguely left up to interpretation, but anime (or just about any story) that reimagines something or can be clearly be seem in a second or third way. The obvious examples are most of the works of Satoshi Kon, especially Millennium Actress, his works are all about perspective and he doesn't even like defining where reality and fantasy intersect.

I have been interested in seeing that, but I've heard the narrator either makes it or breaks it depending on the viewer.

I've had my eye on that series since it first started airing, but I'm waiting until all the episodes are out. It's good to hear it's as informative as I was hoping it would be! =)

IMO Folktales would not really be a great show to marathon. Each episode has three stories and nothing connects. If there was ever a show that's safe, and maybe preferable, to watch weekly, Folktales is it.

Actually Folktales from Japan looks pale, comparing to Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi. I was lucky to watch it as a child and if there were one series I'd like to see fully subbed it would be that.

Folktales, history- I love all references that feed my inner nerd. I love the impression that author had reached further than the nearest trivia book and have something to offer for people who did so.

Thanks for telling me, I think I'll start following it then. I haven't tried to follow many shows as they are airing, but the result tends to be me pulling my hair out wanting the next episode right now Anime hyper. Which I guess means they're doing a good job! But this sounds like a good show to follow.

oh my, 1453 episodes, I guess Folktales would be a cinch to marathon in comparison Very Happy
Just from the pictures of that I'd say Folktales is at least trying to partially emulate it.

What hits the spot is sometimes rather schizophrenic for instance these do:

Inteligent Science Fiction- Sci-fi universes that are well thought out and interesting and make me want to explore them such as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Real Drive, or Ergo Proxy.

A Compelling Mystery-Something with a really well constructed and thought out mystery element. Preferably where the solution to which I can't figure out until it's revealed.

Mature Romance Series-Romance series where the couple actually advance to the point where they're getting married, consummating the relationship as lovers, or even have kids. It's just refreshing after all these series with relationships that stop when they confess to each other or kiss.

but so do:

Gritty Action- Action series such as Black Lagoon with lots of bloody violence, explosions, cursing etc.

Shameless Fanservice Action Series-Shows such as Sekirei with plenty of ladies beating the clothes off each other.

Rocket Fists - Hello Mazinger, How're you?

Getter Rays - I'm sure they just found something in the news about this. I damn hope Japan gets that Mobile Defense Suit Program off the ground, with Go Nagai as Project Director.

A Compelling Mystery - More shows like Paranoia Agent? Yes please.

Serious God and Demon Talk - A show that uses religion like magic. You know, a monk from a temple has incredibly specific magical powers from a life of training. And he/she is now squaring up to a brutal Kabbalah-using magician, who spouts the names of ancient gods to devastating effects.
Hell, even To aru Majutsu no Index had some great moments, like the Angel episodes (18 or so?). Great atmosphere, everything is so entirely fucked and you main character have to fix it. Which is ruined by the "Oh no wait. It was all by accident, everythings cool" ending.

Heroic Demon - Demons cause destruction to large areas, and they clearly take pleasure in beating the opponents, scaring their opponents with a dark aura , and a smile on their face. And it is so cool when they do what they do for the good side. This is not just limited to demons, but particularly powerful vampires, monstrous espers, aliens, wizards etc.

Demonic Loli - The child like character who looks sweet on the outside, but is actually far more mature, perhaps an old vampire in the form of a child, the kid who is surprisingly smart. Or the person who seems to hit their peek in size as a kid, might have some other kid traits, but some that are more mature or even beyond human, this even hits the girl from Seitokai Yakuindomo.

The Silent Sufferer - Many series throw in a stoic character, characters that show very little emotions, and perhaps you would even think that they are robots. But then there are those that you learn their past, or that you see let their emotionless mask almost fall off. They have been suffering the entire time, but they kept quite, acting like normal, and maybe even aiding people who caused them harm. What is awesome is when the mask falls off and you see that there was a normal person under there the whole time.

Unexpected plot twists- The more unexpected, the better. I love not seeing something coming. I enjoy plot twists even if they make no sense, but if it does fit with the show and make sense, it's even better. I love rewatching a series and catching hints and foreshadowing at the twists. Honestly, that's almost the only reason I would rewatch something. No big plot twist=(most likely) no rewatch=less likely to buy or remember favorably.

Quirkiness- if something is just really weird or out there, it makes more of an impression on me. I'm more willing to try something that's isn't my usual cup of tea if it's also quirky. For example, I never would have tried tsuritama if it had seemed more normal, or enjoyed Soul Eater as much if it didn't treat madness as an illness or employ it on its characters.

Anti-Heroes- Protagonists who aren't typical "good guys" they are decidedly unheroic. They could be vigilantes or cowards, they're self-absorbed jerks, criminals, or down right villainous themselves, but yet are the central characters doing bad things to other villains.

Redubs - I love them for comedies. "To be a man you must have honor, honor and a penis." Sgt. Frog, Shin Chan, Ghost Stories, and Hetalia are favorites of mine.

Could you please name some shows which has this element in it?

Maybe Hazuki/Luna from Tsukuyomi Moonphase? There was also the little diclonius girl from Elfen Lied but her name escapes me.
