Sure that fansubber was bad, yet, not nearly as bad as TVNi... Haruhi's official subs.

ughf, I have heard the arguments on both sides of the glitzy fansubs that most fansubbers use now and have to say that for the titles I will watch fansubbed, I don't care for it. Most of the time they're not really too bad and are perfectly bearable however once in a great while (I don't really watch too much fansubbed stuff at this point as i'm trying to catch up on anime that is currently being released here) there is the obnoxious disfigured font/color combination that makes it barely legible what-so-ever; that I can do without. Despite all this I can't comment on the translations themselves as I don't speak fluent japanese by any means however I do have a lingering suspicion that some fansubbers take liberties with expletives in some titles.

Oh so true. I like watch fansub shows to see the quality of the translation. Most of them really suck or try too hard on translations presented by the comic. Sure there is the pzazz and what not, but does not beat a good translation. Don't get me wrong that there are a lot of teams that do great translation, but sometimes a quality subtitle provided by the licensees just nails it well.

Styled subs are great. Styled subs, and typesetting for signs, are even better. Styled subs, sings and a small note here and there to explain a joke or reference is also great. That said, some groups HAVE been known to.....go overboard.

Still, styled subs are fine, sign translations are NECESSARY, since we can't read Japanese. I don't mind small notes, and karaoke can be done without all the fancy effects and still be great and useful. I saw some karaoke recently that was virtually unreadable.

Also, ANY decent fansubs > official yellow VOBSUB.

When it comes down to fansubs, I tend not be nitpicky about every little detail that comes with the subbing since the end "product" is of course free. But it does get tiring to see a group slap massive text over a mere word or little phrase; just one of the noteworthy perks that come with watching fansubs of course.

Good column by the way Robin, keep it up!

All subtitles should be like AnimEigo's. Best subtitles in the entire business.

This is why I watch dubs. Well, one of the reasons.

My "Remnants of Bitterness from the Marathon Fansub Debate Part Deux" Sense is tingling...in particular, regarding a very certain conversation string there that Zac was very, very fond of... Laughing

Well, as a watcher of fansubbed anime, sometimes the translation is blatantly wrong, disregarding fansubbers not proficient in english.
Also, some of the subs can be annoyingly difficult to read by being to fast or looking too bad.
I have not much problems with official yellow rimmed white subs.
Only thing where some fansubs are actually superior is color-coded subs assigning colors according to characters' hair color, making it easier to follow dialogues.
With just plain old official subs, it's difficult to follow 3+ people having a conversation.
If i would understand japanese i'd be able to follow the dialogue as well, as the characters have different voices.

Karaoke subs, handy?
I say yes, it does give the fan something to practice with for the karaoke event at that convention or with friends.
But really moving, weird and sparkly stuff?
No, why make things more difficult to read than necessary.

I'm not advocating fansubs, so don't go down THAT road.
I'm commenting on fansubs as i experience them and give suggestions where official fansubs could be improved.

Oh yeah, the comic is hilarious, the 3D glasses at the end really do me in.

I'm sensing this weeks Nina to be slightly controversial Confused

Yeah usually by now there are very short sentences saying how funny it is...but hey, I'm surprised at how everyone's comments are respectful and seemingly non-threatening to this point.

Personally, I thought the bouncing ball part was funny Laughing Keep rollin'!

There are some days watching fansubs that I really miss generic yellow subs.

-Multiple font colors are annoying
-Ornate fonts are hard to read
-Translations that start with "the sign says..." takes too much time to read
-Song subs in three different formats at once are an destructing.

Just give me white or yellow sanserif font and simple music and sign subs and I'm happy.

Anyone else notice the error in the fansubbed screenshot?

I actually like a lot of the styled fonts that get used in fansubs, so long as they are legible. Having said that, they are by no means a justification for fansub preference, since a) I'm watching anime to watch anime, not the translation fonts b) legibility is first and foremost c) official translations can be trusted to be more accurate (I say this as somebody who has no comprehension of Japanese), or at the very least flow better.

Oh, and if I ever saw a group providing liner notes for 'itadakimasu' or use a bouncing ball effect for dialogue translation, I'd switch so damn quick...

The 3D glasses were a nice touch by the way. The next step in fansubs? Laughing

Fansubs with white, Arial text with a colored outline (like this) are perfect. They're much easier on the eyes than yellow with a black shadow. The next kind down is fancy fonts like this. At this stage it's already getting difficult, and anything more elaborate is just irritating. Still, I'd choose that over ugly yellow any day.
