Most anime builds up romance throughout the series, and if all goes well, the two lead characters end up together in the last episode.
I just wondered, is there any anime where the main protagonists are a couple from the very beginning, or maybe, around the half-way point? Preferably in the action genre? Or maybe even lighthearted comedy/slice of life? I'm open to all suggestions btw Very Happy.

EDIT:: Thank you so much for the tons of suggestions folks! I was completely clueless! Please keep them coming!
And if I may add, I don't really dig older anime (pre-2000s) mainly cause of the art; reason I prefer modern anime.

Well lets see:

Accel World has arguably done this, with the characters both said that they like each other, and entered a quasi date level early on.

Bakemonogatari had the characters date fairly early on, quite a bit of the story had the main character being too nice to others when he is in a relationship.

I am partial to Dusk Maiden, but I am not sure it was official until later.

I'm going through My Anime and checking.

Sailor Moon franchise - Usagi and Mamoru are a couple from pretty early on. There relationship is basically Usagi f's up and Mamo-chan comes and saves her. spoiler[Well until he goes to "America."] And if you don't mind lesbian side characters Haruka and Michiru and a couple the whole time they appear in Sailor Moon S.

Tsubasa - Sakura and Li start out as a couple when they do their adventures. He's there to save Sakura's memories even though she'll never remember him. It's sweet and great if you like other CLAMP series.

Loveless - Has some action but it's word fighting and reeks of S&M. Soubi and Ritsuka are a couple (I think.) If they aren't a couple they are a fighting pair who kiss on screen. Close enough, except for the undertones that it's not really be consensual since Ritsuka is 12 and Soubi is like 21.

Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances) has the 2 main leads get together fairly early on, although the anime only covers about a third of the manga. It's not an action series by any means though.

Baccano, for sure
Isaac and Miria are an awesome comedy duo/couple. The show is quite action packed, too.

Kemonozume
The main characters are a couple from the beginning. This show may be a bit rough to watch, but it's a damn good show.

Spice and Wolf - Holo and Lawrence hook up in the first episode and it just gets better and better. I don't know if you'd call it an action show but the two have many adventures together. Lawrence is a travelling merchant while Holo is a wolf god and their scrapes usually come about thanks to Lawrence's business misjudgements.

Ai Yori Aoshi - not action, sadly, but the main characters became a couple very early on, though it was kept a secret from many.

For more action-oriented titles, one of the best examples is Kuraru Phantom Memory. Kurau and Christmas are clearly in a deeply loving relationship from the latter's first appearance on, and one could probably classify them as a couple even though the nature of their "romance" is very unconventional.

One could probably also argue a case for Allison and Lillia. Although their relationship doesn't necessarily get romantic until later on, Allison and Will are clearly a couple from the get-go in the first half of the series and Lillia and Treize are effectively a couple from the earliest scenes of the second half of the series.

I was also thinking of Allison and Lillia, even though I got bored of that show pretty quickly and never finished it.

I'd recommend you check out Kara no Kyoukai if you want to see an unusual couple's development with some really great action. Sort of "thawing ice queen" character type, but some other elements of the plot put an unusual reason behind and spin on that archetype. The two main characters are sort of a "couple" in the sense that they're paired up as the main characters, but they don't really have a conventional romantic relationship at all, and it's interesting how they develop during the story.

Rosette and Chrono from Chrono Crusade, definitely.

It's a little more subtle....the two are actually never seen declaring their love for each other...but they don't need to because it's just so obvious they do....and it's made crystal-clear to us Anime hyper

Keiichi and Belldandy from Oh My Goddess!

There is also Takeru and Hikari from This Ugly Yet Beautiful World

This was the first series I thought of, actually.....

The Lovely Angels (aka Dirty Pair) - Not a romantic couple, by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly inseparable. Very Happy

White Album- Toya and Yuki are already an established couple when the series begins. It's a romantic drama not an adventure series though.

A lot of these examples are straying away from the "action series" part of what Sixth is asking for, people. Neither White Album nor Oh My Goddess! is even remotely close to being an action series.

Chrono Crusade is, but I hesitate to call Rosette and Chrono a "couple," as that's more a case of loyalty than romance.

This Ugly Yet Beautiful World is a borderline case for being classified as an action series (the bulk of it isn't), though the "couple" status certainly applies to Takeru and Hikari and from her initial appearance on.

One might argue a case here for 3x3 Eyes, as that's definitely an action title and Pai and Yakumo pretty quickly evolve towards "couple" status. A case could also be argued for Steel Angel Kurumi, although that one is more one-sided for most of the series.

And how have we gotten this deep into the thread without bringing up Romeo x Juliet, which is one of the ultimate examples of what the OP is talking about? The anime version is as much an action series as a drama, after all.

In World of Narue, the two leads become a couple pretty quickly, but there is only minor action, with some more adventure.

I'll second 3x3 Eyes. There's also Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade which has some action in it, but the leads' couple status isn't clear (that I can remember). Oh! Voices of a Distant Star has some good mecha action and the leads are together the entire time.

Can't think of any other anime, but Legend of Korra has ~38 more episodes planned (in addition to the 12 existing episodes) and 2 of the main characters (I won't spoil which) became a couple at the end of this first season. They have ~38 more eps to explore their relationship, and this is a very action oriented series so it seems exactly what you're requesting!
