the anime alone will make up a big chunk of it. to the best of my knowledge anime has been airing since the before the 60's.

So they finally have discovered wikipedia? Just add the missing animes/manga there instead of doing something totally new.

It'd be nice to see them fill in the gaps for some one-shot, forgotten, never to be released on DVD or even BD OVA episodes from the bubble era. There's tons that there's just no information on.

Wikipedia is a horrible model for an anime database. The one here on ANN is much better, where changes to entries require some sort of informative and credible source. |

That's what I'm thinking, a Japanese equivalent of TV Tropes or they're making ANN for the Japanese audience.

Well that depends on what you are looking for. ANN databese usually has info about all people involved in production, but lack any information on deeper story, characters etc. It just gives too little information about anime or manga to actually understand what its about. Here wikipedia is much better. So it would be great to mix both of them. |

It's about time. What surprised me was that there wasn't already such a system in place, especially since Japan is such a huge producer of manga and anime. I look forward to this

I would love to see a database that integrated data on DVD sales and viewer ratings. I've recently started building spreadsheets of viewing data. Having the Japanese government do all that work for us with an historically complete database would be invaluable. If I were trying to promote exports of Japanese media, I'd include information on foreign licensing as well.
Building public databases like this is only useful if ordinary people can export the data in standard formats like comma- or tab-separated values or spreadsheets. Online databases that permit queries but not downloads of the underlying data are appropriate for commercial entities like ANN. A public entity like the Agency for Cultural Affairs should make all the data it collects available in easy-to-use formats. The Agency mentions the database in this document describing its support for "media arts." |

To see a anime library that would hold a data base of every anime and manga ever created. big small epic and failed. Though it might be a bit much seeing the length of time anime has been around.
This site is done well but still has holes in coverage on anime and manga. |

So they're trying to rebrand Japan from what now? And why do I feel this will be at odds with that other governmental manga/anime policy, you know, the one that wants to pretend certain titles don't exist? Anyway, it's even odds that it will be revisionist no matter how you look at it. Otherwise, making new anime and manga would be kind of redundant. Also, having a database where many listed titles than can only be found at the database rather than actual copies lessens the usefullness of having a database. |

The further goal of this project is not just a database of info but an actual video archive, where anyone can "check out" a particular work and view it for academic/historical research, etc... (at a subscribing institution).
I.e. it'll be a database + massive video library which large universities can subscribe to. But that's still under budgetary review I believe. |

I would love to work on the team that's creating that database. I love to collect information on the Japanese Anime industry, so it would be a job I would love to do.
