Well that was a really informative podcast as always Zac.. I have hopes of becoming a reviewer and every time you do show like this it gives me more tips/help to do so. I really appreciate the time you Hope took to do this thank you very much.

What was V-guy smoking for the first question?
First of all, NISA didn't grab Persona 4, Sentai did. NISA doesn't even do dubs. Secondly, Sentai hasn't even confirmed it they'd get the games cast back just that they were looking into it. So someone's jumping the gun somewhere.

Is the new disclaimer a nod to Borderland's Claptrap?

I think the Haruhi movie was well received because #1. lots of fans like the "Disappearance" book, but also #2. because the second season of the show was pretty bad. Had the movie been made right after season one, it probably would have been more "pretty good" for reception, but after S2 of the TV series, it did seem pretty awesome if you liked the characters from S1.
Regarding "harem" shows in the USA... uh... "The Bachelor"?

Yeah the movie was decent but do have to agree a bit with the whole fandom/run time. I am willing to hugely admit i have a bias towards eroge adaptions no matter if they can merit themselves or not.
Nearly everyone is the set up for a basic or generic harem anime which Zac loves "joking", however they feel so rushed, lazy and shallow. When I sit back and read them however I get a sense of more enjoyment than seeing it animated.

Regarding the Mass Effect anime, I was extremely disappointed to see that they decided to make James of all people the protagonist. Does anyone like that guy? Also, the character designs they showed off recently are hideous.
I think Zac also has a good point about the timing, but the same point could also be made in terms of story- after the epic climax of the third game anything else they show is going to seem boring.

Could you elaborate on how you think Battle Royale is, er, torture porn in any sense? I'm actually blown away that someone with a background in film could come to that conclusion. The only possible explanation I could think of is the manga, which I haven't read, and have heard it's more or less another manga. The film and the novel it's based on have more in common with 1984 or Lord of the Flies than Saw or The Devil's Rejects. Even the sequel, while crippled, is nothing even resemblant of torture porn. I can understand if it's not for you and how this would make something like Gantz difficult to appreciate, but Kinji Fukasaku's film is part of the reason I go back to films. I feel like there is something very poignant and bittersweet encapsulated in that piece, enough that I'm tempted to recommend it to someone with an aversion to graphic violence.

I've only read the novel and I don't know if I would label it "torture porn", I can kind of see why.
For me, it felt as though whatever central narrative the story had was drowned out by the dozen or so non-plot related vignettes where random students were set up to die messily.
There were just WAY too many other students who I felt were only there to get killed. I know, it's to show that "people are gonna die and this is serious!" but they keep driving that point home again, and again, and again. It almost felt like too gratuitous.
Spend several pages developing a character and then killing them off to show how tragic/cruel/horrible the whole thing is once or twice? Okay. Do it 3/4/5/10/etc. times? Going a bit overboard.

@Shenl742:
Torture porn requires not only gratuitous violence but a sexual element as well. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure if Saw is torture porn per se, perhaps it's more of a splatter film. Maybe the purest example is to be found in the Guinea Pig series; there's one of those that is basically just a dude in yoroi filleting a young women in detail so convincing there were stateside criminal investigations. In any event, I'm not sure this can even apply to literature (and if that's all you got out of the book, what a shame!).

Does it require sexual elements? I dunno, I don't think it's one of those things without a concrete definition. I think it's kind of one of those things with slight personal meanings and in Hope's case (and alot of people) it's just shorthand for "way too much focus and frequancy on death and violence to the point of disgust", basically a snuff film, only fictional.
I know in the novels and movie that one chick with the scythe seduces one person...and I really think the manga adaptation fits your discription because so many female characters got a bust upgrade, almost everyone gets a panty shot no matter how innapropriate the situation, and shreded clothes were a regular occurance.
I'm not saying you're really wrong, I just think that's what hope was going for.

@Shenl742:
Sorry, I made an edit to explain the subgenre little bit better.
I suspect that from her brief exchange on Gantz with Zac that you're right, and she's just using torture porn as a shorthand for "ew I don't like that". Which is exactly not what I would expect for someone who opens with "I love movies, I took classes, I write reviews because I love to" and so on. Zac stepped up for Gantz, and he's my nerd rolemodel, so the gloves are off!

Well, I dunno if you should be too harsh to dismiss her just because she may or may not have slightly missused a term to classify something containing content they don't like. I think that's a little extreme.

@Shenl742:
I'm just chiming in for BR, not sending anyone to the ER...and I do take issue with the torture porn label. It's just grossly misrepresentative of the content; if you have the constitution, check out the real McCoy and you might agree.
EDIT: We are in some kind of edit battle, bear with me here.

I meant dismiss, I guess. Oh well. It's all semantics and that's something you can argue about forever.

Having read the Battle Royale manga years ago I would also seriously disagree with the claim that it's torture porn. There's actual development, characters have relationships, and you do root for the characters to survive and not just get shot.
I think claiming that it's torture porn would be like trying to call Berserk torture porn, sure a lot of people die but it's not the reason you like it.
