I enjoyed this version well enough, but I do prefer the previous one's approach.
In the earlier version, Sasakura was more the emcee than the MC, like The Cryptkeeper. I didn't want to know more about him personally, any more than I want Crypto's backstory. There was always a vaguely supernatural ambiance, like the mythical fairy origins of the bar's name, which drew me to it. I got the impression that Eden Hall might well be an ethereal venue, only accessible to those in need of it (like that weird shop in GitS:SAC that the Major stumbled into), and Sasakura was always there. That resonates with me more than the Bartender having a real life outside the bar as in this adaptation. (this is how I remember it, but on a second viewing, I might see it differently ) They're both worthy series though, so whatever your preference, mystical or grounded, there's something for everyone. Though that writer popping in just as they were discussing him was pretty uncanny, eh? |
